March Holidays for Kids 2027: A Fun LA Idea for Every Day!

13 min read

March is the month that cannot make up its mind. One week it feels like winter, the next week everyone is in shorts at the park. Kids feel it too, which is why March can be a little wild at home.

Good news: the calendar is packed with reasons to celebrate. We rounded up March holidays for every single day of 2027, from Pi Day and St. Patrick's Day to Holi, Purim, and Easter, plus real Los Angeles outings like the LA Marathon weekend and Dodgers Opening Day.

Pick the days that make your crew smile and skip the rest. Nobody hands out medals for doing all 31. (Except at the LA Marathon.)

March Holidays 2027 at a Glance

Here are the big March holidays and LA dates to know before you start planning. We checked every 2027 date below against official or authoritative sources.

  • Saturday and Sunday, March 6 and 7: LA 5K, LA Kids Run, and the Los Angeles Marathon

  • Friday to Sunday, March 5 to 7: Festival of Whales in Dana Point

  • Tuesday, March 9 or Wednesday, March 10: Eid al-Fitr (expected, depending on the moon)

  • Sunday, March 14: Daylight saving time begins, and it is Pi Day

  • Wednesday, March 17: St. Patrick's Day

  • Saturday, March 20: First day of spring (the equinox is at 1:25 p.m. Pacific)

  • Monday, March 22: Holi, and Purim begins at sundown

  • Thursday, March 25: Dodgers Opening Day at Dodger Stadium

  • Sunday, March 28: Easter

  • Wednesday, March 31: Cesar Chavez Day

Spring break comes early for LAUSD families this year. The district's 2026-2027 calendar lists spring recess from Monday, March 22, through Friday, March 26, with school back on March 29, and Wednesday, March 31, is also a no-school day. Check our LAUSD 2026-2027 calendar guide and your own school's calendar, since other districts and private schools often break at different times.

Week 1: March 1 to 7

March 1 (Monday): Peanut Butter Lovers' Day + Women's History Month Begins

Kick off the month with the stickiest holiday on the calendar. Set up a peanut butter tasting with crunchy versus creamy, then build silly snack faces on rice cakes with banana slices and raisins. If anyone in your house has a nut allergy, sunflower seed butter works just as well.

March 1 also starts Women's History Month and meteorological spring. Ask each kid to pick one woman they admire, from a scientist to a grandma, and draw her portrait for the fridge.

March 2 (Tuesday): Read Across America Day + Old Stuff Day

Many schools celebrate reading on or around March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Pull out a stack of rhyming books, read them in your best silly voice, and challenge kids to make up a two-line rhyme of their own.

It is also Old Stuff Day, so dig out an old photo album or a toy you had as a kid. Need more books? Your library card unlocks a lot, as we explain in our post on free perks that come with your LA Public Library card.

March 3 (Wednesday): World Wildlife Day

The United Nations marks World Wildlife Day every March 3. List every wild animal your family has seen in LA, from crows to coyotes.

Then take a backyard or neighborhood safari with binoculars (or toilet paper tube binoculars). It is also the goofy If Pets Had Thumbs Day. Our guess: the dog opens the treat drawer first.

March 4 (Thursday): March Forth Day + Scrapbooking Day

Say the date out loud: March fourth sounds like "march forth." Turn that pun into a family goal-setting night. Each person writes one thing to try this spring, like riding without training wheels.

It is also International Scrapbooking Day. Start a simple spring memory book with construction paper, glue sticks, and a few photos. Add a page each week.

March 5 (Friday): Festival of Whales Opens in Dana Point

Gray whales are migrating along the Southern California coast in March, and Dana Point throws a party for them. The 56th annual Festival of Whales runs all weekend at Dana Point Harbor with marine-themed activities, educational exhibits, live music, and family entertainment.

Dates: Friday, March 5, to Sunday, March 7, 2027

Check the festival website for the schedule. For more ocean fun, see our guide to the best aquariums in Southern California.

March 6 (Saturday): LA 5K and LA Kids Run

Saturday of LA Marathon weekend belongs to the little runners. The LA Kids Run is a half-kilometer race (about a quarter mile) at Dodger Stadium for kids ages 3 to 8, and every finisher gets a T-shirt, medal, and bib. Grown-ups can run or walk the LA 5K the same morning.

Where: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles

Date: Saturday, March 6, 2027

Time: LA 5K starts at 8 a.m.; Kids Run waves begin at about 9:45 a.m.

Registration is required, so sign up early. Our 2027 Los Angeles Marathon weekend guide for families has more tips.

March 7 (Sunday): The Los Angeles Marathon + Cereal Day

Thousands of runners take on the streets of LA today, with the full field starting at Dodger Stadium at 7 a.m., according to the official race weekend schedule. Make posters, pack cowbells, and find a cheering spot.

It is also National Cereal Day, so have a cereal bar breakfast before you head out. Expect road closures, so check the course map before driving.

Week 2: March 8 to 14

March 8 (Monday): International Women's Day

International Women's Day celebrates women's achievements around the world. Read a picture book biography of someone like Katherine Johnson or Sally Ride, and talk about what made her brave.

Then help kids write a thank-you note to a woman who makes their life better, like a teacher, coach, aunt, or neighbor.

March 9 (Tuesday): Barbie's Birthday

Barbie made her debut at the American International Toy Fair on March 9, 1959. Throw a birthday party for every doll and action figure in the house, with a cardboard box dream house and a paper fashion show. Then ask kids which three careers they would pick for their own toy.

March 10 (Wednesday): Eid al-Fitr (Expected Date)

Eid al-Fitr marks the joyful end of Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting. In 2027 it is expected on Tuesday, March 9, or Wednesday, March 10, depending on the sighting of the new moon. Families celebrate with prayers, special meals, sweets, and gifts.

If your family celebrates, Eid Mubarak. If not, it is a wonderful chance to learn about a holiday many LA classmates and neighbors share. Read a picture book about Eid or make a paper lantern together.

March 11 (Thursday): Popcorn Lover's Day

Turn the living room into a movie theater tonight. Make a big bowl of popcorn and set out toppings like cinnamon sugar, parmesan, or a few chocolate chips, and let everyone mix a custom bag.

Popcorn is a choking hazard for babies and young toddlers, so keep a different snack on hand for little ones.

March 12 (Friday): Girl Scouts Day + Plant a Flower Day

Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts on March 12, 1912. Celebrate with a mini badge challenge at home: tie a knot, learn a campfire song, or plan a simple meal. Curious about joining? Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles has troop info.

It is also Plant a Flower Day, and spring planting season is perfect in Southern California. Plant marigolds, sunflower seeds, or California poppy seeds in a pot.

March 13 (Saturday): Earmuff Day + Open an Umbrella Indoors Day

Earmuff Day honors Chester Greenwood of Maine, who patented an improved earmuff design in 1877. Ask kids to sketch an invention that solves an everyday problem. (A robot that folds laundry, please.)

Today is also the silly Open an Umbrella Indoors Day. Let kids decide whether they are brave enough to pop one open in the living room. Mind the lamps.

March 14 (Sunday): Pi Day + Daylight Saving Time Begins

Clocks spring forward one hour at 2 a.m., so expect a sleepy, slightly cranky Sunday. Keep plans light and get outside in the afternoon sun.

It is also Pi Day (3.14), which means pie, of course. Bake a simple fruit pie or mini pizza pies, then measure the circumference and diameter of plates around the house to discover that pi shows up every time. Want more kitchen science? Try ideas from our list of fun science experiments to do at home.

Parent tip: Start shifting bedtime 10 to 15 minutes earlier a few nights before the time change. Your Monday morning will go much smoother.

Week 3: March 15 to 21

March 15 (Monday): Ides of March

The Ides of March was a date on the ancient Roman calendar, and it is famous because Julius Caesar was assassinated on that day in 44 BC. For kids, focus on the fun stuff: Romans built roads, aqueducts, and the Colosseum.

Try building a mini aqueduct with cardboard tubes, tape, and a cup of water. If it leaks, congratulations, you are now an engineer.

March 16 (Tuesday): Everything You Do Is Right Day

This is a gentle, made-up holiday with a lovely message. Notice the effort kids put into homework, chores, and kindness today, and say it out loud.

At dinner, go around the table and share one thing each person did well today.

March 17 (Wednesday): St. Patrick's Day

Wear green, eat something green, and set a leprechaun trap with a shoebox, some gold coins, and a ladder made of popsicle sticks. Leave a trail of tiny glitter footprints in the morning, and watch the kids lose their minds.

LA's best-known family St. Patrick's celebration is the Hermosa Beach St. Patrick's Day Parade, a seven-block march down Pier Avenue with school bands and local groups. In 2026 it was held on Saturday, March 14. The 2027 date has not been announced yet, so check the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce for updates.

March 18 (Thursday): Absolutely Incredible Kid Day

Camp Fire started Absolutely Incredible Kid Day to encourage grown-ups to write letters to the kids in their lives.

Write a short note to each of your kids listing three things that make them incredible, and tuck it into a lunchbox or under a pillow. Ask grandparents to send one too.

March 19 (Friday): St. Joseph's Day + the Swallows Return

Every March 19, Mission San Juan Capistrano celebrates St. Joseph's Day and the legendary return of the swallows, a tradition that dates back to the 1920s. The celebration includes bell ringing, mariachi music, Native American storytelling, dancing, swallow talks, and crafts.

Where: Mission San Juan Capistrano, 26801 Old Mission Road

San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675

Date: Friday, March 19, 2027

Time: Check the Mission's five-year calendar and event page for 2027 hours

Cost: Admission is charged; children 4 and under have been free. Check the website for 2027 ticket prices.

At home, make paper swallows and talk about why birds migrate.

March 20 (Saturday): First Day of Spring + International Day of Happiness

The spring equinox arrives at 1:25 p.m. Pacific time today, when day and night are close to equal length. Celebrate with a picnic or a flower hunt.

It is also the International Day of Happiness, World Storytelling Day, and World Sparrow Day. Tell a family story at dinner and name one thing that made each of you happy. If you are in Orange County, the San Juan Capistrano Swallows Day Parade is listed for 11 a.m. today on the Mission's calendar.

Spring also means wildflowers. The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is open sunrise to sunset, with peak bloom typically in late March or early April and a $10 per-vehicle day-use fee. Dogs are not allowed, and visitors must stay on the trails. For more spots, see our guide to the best places to see spring wildflowers in Southern California.

March 21 (Sunday): Palm Sunday + International Day of Forests

For Christian families, Palm Sunday begins Holy Week, recalling Jesus' entry into Jerusalem. Kids can make palm-frond crafts from green paper and talk about the week ahead leading to Easter.

It is also the International Day of Forests. Make leaf rubbings or count how many kinds of trees grow on your street. March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day too, when many families wear mismatched, colorful socks to celebrate.

Week 4: March 22 to 28

March 22 (Monday): Holi + World Water Day + Spring Break Begins

Holi, the Hindu festival of colors, falls on Monday, March 22, in 2027. It celebrates spring, love, and the victory of good over evil, and it is famous for joyful clouds of colored powder. At home, try a backyard color run with washable sidewalk chalk paint in spray bottles.

It is also World Water Day, so talk about how much water your family uses and try a five-minute shower challenge. For many LAUSD families, spring recess starts today. Need ideas for the week? Browse our boredom-busting spring break activities and spring break camps in Los Angeles.

March 23 (Tuesday): Purim

Purim begins at sundown on Monday, March 22, and is celebrated on Tuesday, March 23, according to Hebcal's Purim 2027 calendar. The holiday retells the story of Queen Esther, who bravely saved the Jewish people, and it is one of the most festive days of the Jewish year.

Families dress up in costumes, make noise with groggers whenever the villain Haman is named, and bake hamantaschen, triangle cookies filled with jam or chocolate. Make your own noisemakers with dried beans in a sealed plastic cup.

March 24 (Wednesday): Chocolate Covered Raisin Day

Mix chocolate-covered raisins, pretzels, and cereal into a homemade trail mix and pack it for a spring break adventure.

Our pick for a spring break outing: Griffith Observatory, which has free admission and is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 10 p.m. and on weekends from 10 a.m. (closed Mondays). Parking near the building is paid. Our complete guide to Griffith Observatory has more tips.

March 25 (Thursday): Dodgers Opening Day + Tolkien Reading Day

Baseball is back. The Dodgers open their 2027 season at home against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, March 25, according to the team's 2027 schedule announcement, and it lands right in the middle of LAUSD spring break.

Not going? Play catch at the park or watch together with ballpark snacks. It is also Tolkien Reading Day, so read a chapter of "The Hobbit" between innings.

March 26 (Friday): Good Friday + Make Up Your Own Holiday Day

Good Friday is a solemn day for many Christian families, observed during Holy Week before Easter.

Later, have some fun with Make Up Your Own Holiday Day. Each kid invents a holiday, names it, and decides how to celebrate. Expect entries like "National Extra Dessert Day."

March 27 (Saturday): Earth Hour + Egg Decorating Day

Earth Hour is usually held on the last Saturday in March at 8:30 p.m. local time, when people around the world switch off nonessential lights for an hour. The 2027 date had not been posted at the time we wrote this, so check the official Earth Hour website. Turn it into a flashlight board game hour.

It is Holy Saturday, too, so it is the perfect afternoon to dye eggs. Try ideas from our Easter egg decorating guide and fill baskets on a budget. Underwood Family Farms in Moorpark hosts a Springtime Easter Festival each spring, but 2027 dates had not been announced yet, so check Underwood's festival page for updates.

March 28 (Sunday): Easter

Happy Easter. Hide eggs in the backyard, at the park, or even inside the living room for a rainy-day hunt. Assign colors by age so the big kids do not sweep up everything.

Looking for ideas beyond the egg hunt? See our 7 ways to celebrate Easter at home, our Easter events in Los Angeles roundup, and these enchanting Easter books for children. Baseball fans, take note: the Dodgers host the Braves on Easter Sunday too.

Week 5: March 29 to 31

March 29 (Monday): Mom and Pop Business Owners Day

Most LAUSD students head back to school today, so keep the afternoon easy. Stop at a family-owned bakery or taco stand and let the kids thank the owner.

Then let kids design a pretend store at home with price tags and a cash register, and talk about what it takes to run a small business.

March 30 (Tuesday): Take a Walk in the Park Day + National Doctors' Day

Pick a park you have never visited, bring a scavenger hunt list, and look for blossoms, bugs, and birds.

Spring trees are putting on a show, too. Check out our list of stunning places to see cherry blossoms in Los Angeles. It is also National Doctors' Day, so kids can draw a thank-you card for their pediatrician to drop off at the next checkup.

March 31 (Wednesday): Cesar Chavez Day

Cesar Chavez Day honors the labor leader who co-founded the United Farm Workers and fought for fair treatment of farm workers. LAUSD lists March 31 as a no-school day. Read a picture book about Chavez, talk about where your fruits and vegetables come from, and learn his famous phrase, "Sí, se puede" ("Yes, we can").

You can learn more from the Cesar Chavez National Monument. Then get ready for tomorrow. April Fools' Day is coming, and our fun pranks to play on your kids are ready when you are.
