February Holidays for Kids 2027: A Fun LA Idea for Every Day

12 min read

February is the shortest month of the year, but somehow it is packed. Valentine's Day, Lunar New Year, Black History Month, Presidents' Day, and in 2027, a Super Bowl right here in LA. That is a lot of celebrating for 28 days.

We made it easy. Here is a fun idea for every single day of February 2027, mixing real February holidays and quirky national days with simple at-home activities and family outings around Los Angeles. Some ideas take ten minutes after school. Others are big LA traditions worth planning around.

Treat this list like a menu, not a homework assignment. Pick the days that sound fun, skip the rest, and save a few ideas for rainy afternoons.

February Holidays 2027 at a Glance

Here are the big February holidays and LA dates to know before you start planning. We checked each 2027 date below with official sources.

  • Monday, Feb. 1: Black History Month begins

  • Tuesday, Feb. 2: Groundhog Day

  • Saturday, Feb. 6: Lunar New Year, welcoming the Year of the Goat

  • Around Monday, Feb. 8: Ramadan is expected to begin (the exact date depends on the moon)

  • Tuesday, Feb. 9: Mardi Gras

  • Friday, Feb. 12, through Monday, Feb. 15: Great Backyard Bird Count

  • Saturday, Feb. 13: 128th Golden Dragon Parade in Chinatown

  • Sunday, Feb. 14: Valentine's Day and Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium

  • Monday, Feb. 15: Presidents' Day (LAUSD schools are closed)

LAUSD's 2026-2027 calendar lists Monday, Feb. 15, as the Presidents' Day holiday. Other LA-area districts may add extra days off, so check our LAUSD 2026-2027 calendar guide and your own school's schedule.

Week 1: February 1 to 7

February 1 (Monday): Black History Month Begins

Black History Month is a wonderful time to learn together as a family. Start a bedtime book stack and read one story each night this month. Our list of must-read books for kids during Black History Month is a great place to begin.

It is also National Freedom Day, which marks the date President Lincoln signed the resolution that became the 13th Amendment. For a weekend outing, the California African American Museum in Exposition Park is a meaningful stop; check its website for current exhibitions and hours.

February 2 (Tuesday): Groundhog Day + Día de la Candelaria

Will Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow? Watch the prediction online with the kids in the morning, then make your own family forecast. In sunny LA, we already know the answer: probably shorts by Thursday.

Head outside at different times of day and trace each other's shadows with sidewalk chalk. Kids love seeing how their shadow shrinks at noon and stretches long in the afternoon. Feb. 2 is also Día de la Candelaria, when whoever found the baby figurine in the Three Kings bread traditionally hosts a tamale party. Tamale night, anyone?

February 3 (Wednesday): Setsubun

Setsubun is a Japanese festival that marks the start of spring on the traditional calendar. Families toss roasted soybeans while shouting "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" ("Demons out! Luck in!") to chase away bad luck.

Make paper oni (ogre) masks, let a grown-up play the ogre, and use crumpled paper balls instead of beans to keep the cleanup easy. To learn more about Japanese American culture in LA, plan a visit to the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo.

February 4 (Thursday): Thank a Mail Carrier Day + Rosa Parks Day

Your mail carrier works through heat waves and rainstorms, so today is a great day to say thanks. Kids can decorate a thank-you card and tape it to the mailbox with a granola bar or a bottle of water.

Feb. 4 is also Rosa Parks' birthday. She was born in 1913, and her courage on a Montgomery bus helped spark the civil rights movement. Read a picture book about her together and talk about what it means to stand up for what is right.

February 5 (Friday): National Weatherperson's Day

Turn your kids into junior meteorologists. Set up a backyard weather station with a jar rain gauge, a paper windsock, and a thermometer, and record the readings every day for a week.

Then film a family weather report with a map drawn on poster board. The National Weather Service Los Angeles office has real forecasts to compare against. Your little forecaster may be more accurate than you expect.

February 6 (Saturday): Lunar New Year

Happy Lunar New Year. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2027, kicks off the Year of the Goat, a holiday celebrated by Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and many other families across Los Angeles. Wear red for luck, share dumplings or noodles, and give red envelopes with a little treat inside.

Kids can make paper lanterns, practice saying "Gong Hei Fat Choy" or "Chúc Mừng Năm Mới," and learn which zodiac animal matches their birth year. The Chinese American Museum near Olvera Street is a great place to learn about LA's Chinese American history. Disneyland Resort says its Lunar New Year celebration at Disney California Adventure returns in 2027, but dates had not been announced when we wrote this. Watch the official Disneyland Lunar New Year page for updates.

Fun fact: there is an annular "ring of fire" solar eclipse today, too. It will not be visible from California, but kids can look up photos and videos from South America afterward.

February 7 (Sunday): Send a Card to a Friend Day

Pull out the markers, stickers, and glitter (brave of you), and make handmade cards for friends, cousins, or grandparents. It is a perfect warm-up for Valentine's Day next weekend.

Today is also Wave All Your Fingers at Your Neighbor Day, which is exactly as silly as it sounds. Take a family walk and give every neighbor an enthusiastic ten-finger wave.

Week 2: February 8 to 14

February 8 (Monday): Kite Flying Day + Ramadan Begins

February breezes make for great kite weather. Grab a store-bought kite or make one from a paper bag and string, then head to a park with lots of open space and no power lines.

Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, prayer, and giving, is expected to begin around Feb. 8 this year, depending on the sighting of the new moon. If your family celebrates, Ramadan Mubarak. If not, it is a lovely opportunity to learn about a tradition many LA neighbors observe, perhaps by reading a children's book about Ramadan together.

February 9 (Tuesday): Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday," the last day of feasting before Lent begins. Throw a mini parade around the living room with homemade masks, beads, and plenty of purple, green, and gold.

In many places, today is also called Pancake Tuesday, so breakfast for dinner is officially encouraged. Try our vegan pancakes recipe kids love, then let everyone design a pancake face with fruit.

February 10 (Wednesday): Umbrella Day + Ash Wednesday

February is often one of the rainiest months in Los Angeles, so Umbrella Day comes at just the right time. Let kids decorate a clear umbrella with paint markers, or cut a big paper umbrella and hang paper raindrops from it.

Today is also Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent for many Christian families. If the rain does arrive, keep our list of 75+ indoor activities for kids in LA handy.

February 11 (Thursday): Inventors' Day + Make a Friend Day

Inventors' Day falls on Thomas Edison's birthday (he was born Feb. 11, 1847). Hand kids a box of recycled odds and ends and challenge them to invent something that solves an everyday problem, like a machine that finds missing socks.

It is also Make a Friend Day and Don't Cry Over Spilled Milk Day. Encourage kids to invite a new classmate to play at recess, and if someone spills at dinner, just laugh it off.

February 12 (Friday): Darwin Day + Lincoln's Birthday + Bird Count Begins

Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln were born on the very same day, Feb. 12, 1809. Celebrate Darwin with a backyard nature hunt for bugs, leaves, and seeds, and talk about how animals adapt to where they live.

Today also kicks off the Great Backyard Bird Count, which runs Feb. 12 to 15, 2027. Families anywhere can watch birds for at least 15 minutes and share what they see, which turns kids into real community scientists.

February 13 (Saturday): Golden Dragon Parade

One of LA's oldest Lunar New Year traditions returns to Chinatown with dragons, lion dancers, marching bands, and floats. It is loud, colorful, and a fantastic way for kids to feel the energy of the holiday.

Where: Chinatown, Los Angeles

Date: Saturday, Feb. 13, 2027

Time: 1 to 4 p.m.

Check the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles site for the route and viewing tips closer to the date. Consider taking Metro to Chinatown to avoid parking headaches.

February 14 (Sunday): Valentine's Day + Super Bowl LXI

Happy Valentine's Day. Start with heart-shaped pancakes or toast, and leave little love notes in lunch boxes, on mirrors, and under pillows. For dozens more ideas, see our creative ways to celebrate Valentine's Day at home with kids.

Then get ready for a big afternoon. Super Bowl LXI is being played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood today, the second time in five years LA has hosted the big game. Even non-football fans can join the fun with a family snack bar, a homemade team poster, and a halftime dance party. Wind down with a pick from our family-friendly Valentine's Day movie night list. It is also Ferris Wheel Day, honoring inventor George Ferris, so draw your dream Ferris wheel.

Week 3: February 15 to 21

February 15 (Monday): Presidents' Day

LAUSD schools are closed for Presidents' Day, officially called Washington's Birthday. Play a game of presidential trivia, or look at the portraits on coins and dollar bills and see who kids can identify.

It is also National Gumdrop Day. Build gumdrop and toothpick structures and see who can make the tallest tower. Need a bigger outing for the long weekend? Browse our guide to free events near you in LA.

February 16 (Tuesday): Do a Grouch a Favor Day

Everyone knows a grouch. Maybe it is a grumpy neighbor, a tired sibling, or (gasp) a parent before coffee. Today, kids get a mission: do something nice for the grumpiest person they know.

Ideas include drawing them a funny picture, telling a joke, or doing one of their chores. Our list of funny jokes for kids is great ammunition.

February 17 (Wednesday): Random Acts of Kindness Day

Kindness is contagious. Make a family kindness bingo card with squares like "hold the door," "compliment a stranger," and "leave a nice note for a teacher." First person to get five in a row picks dessert.

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation has free printable ideas for families and classrooms. Keep the bingo card on the fridge and see how many squares you can fill by the end of the week.

February 18 (Thursday): National Battery Day

Batteries power almost every toy in the house, so take a peek at how they work. Build a simple lemon battery with a copper coin, a galvanized nail, and wires, and see if you can light a tiny LED.

This is a great chance to talk about battery safety, too. Keep button batteries away from little ones, and recycle old batteries properly. For more hands-on fun, browse our 101 science experiments for kids at home.

February 19 (Friday): Chocolate Mint Day

Celebrate Chocolate Mint Day with mint chocolate chip ice cream, chocolate mint cookies, or a cup of hot cocoa with a peppermint stick. Kids can be official taste testers and rate each treat.

Want to make it a science lesson? Plant a small pot of mint on the windowsill. Mint grows quickly, smells amazing, and is very hard to kill, which makes it a perfect first plant for kids.

February 20 (Saturday): Love Your Pet Day + Full Snow Moon

Pamper your pets today. Brush the dog, build the cat a cardboard fort, or give the goldfish a pep talk. If you do not have a pet, visit an animal friend at a petting zoo or farm.

Our list of must-visit zoos and petting zoos in SoCal has plenty of options. Tonight, step outside to see February's full moon, often called the Snow Moon, and enjoy some Cherry Pie Day dessert while you are at it.

February 21 (Sunday): International Mother Language Day

Los Angeles is one of the most multilingual cities in the world. Ask grandparents, neighbors, or friends to teach your kids how to say "hello" and "thank you" in their first language.

Make a family language map with all the languages spoken by people you know. If your family speaks more than one language at home, today is a great day to celebrate it with a favorite song or story.

Week 4: February 22 to 28

February 22 (Monday): World Thinking Day + Walking the Dog Day

World Thinking Day is celebrated by Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world. Even if your family is not involved in scouting, spend a few minutes at dinner talking about kids in other countries and what their days might look like.

It is also Walking the Dog Day and George Washington's actual birthday (he was born Feb. 22, 1732). Take the dog, or yourselves, on an after-school walk around the neighborhood.

February 23 (Tuesday): Dog Biscuit Day + Tennis Day

Bake homemade dog biscuits with simple ingredients like whole wheat flour, pumpkin puree, and an egg. Use cookie cutters for fun shapes, and let your pup be the official judge. (Check with your vet about any food allergies first.)

For National Tennis Day, grab rackets and a ball and head to a public court, or play balloon tennis indoors with paper plates taped to paint stirrers.

February 24 (Wednesday): Día de la Bandera + Tortilla Chip Day

Mexico celebrates its Flag Day, Día de la Bandera, on Feb. 24. Learn what the green, white, and red stand for, and the story of the eagle and the snake in the center.

Then celebrate National Tortilla Chip Day with a homemade salsa or guacamole bar. Little ones can mash avocados, and older kids can chop tomatoes with supervision.

February 25 (Thursday): Winter Whale Watching

Winter is gray whale migration season along the Southern California coast, when these giants travel between Alaska and the warm lagoons of Baja California. Many harbors run whale-watching trips this time of year.

Not ready for a boat? The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro is a great place to learn about local ocean life. At home, measure out 45 feet on the sidewalk with chalk to show kids just how long an adult gray whale can be.

February 26 (Friday): Tell a Fairy Tale Day + Stand Up to Bullying Day

Snuggle up and tell a fairy tale, but switch it up. What if the wolf was the hero of "Little Red Riding Hood"? Let kids invent new endings and act them out.

Today is also International Stand Up to Bullying Day. Many fairy tales feature characters who get picked on, which makes a great starting point to talk about kindness and what to do if someone is being bullied at school.

February 27 (Saturday): International Polar Bear Day

Polar Bear Day raises awareness about these amazing Arctic animals and the sea ice they depend on. Learn polar bear facts from Polar Bears International, the group behind the day.

Then try a blubber experiment. Fill a bowl with ice water, coat a gloved hand in shortening, and compare how cold each hand feels. Kids will instantly understand how polar bears stay warm.

February 28 (Sunday): National Science Day + LA Marathon Countdown

National Science Day in India honors physicist C.V. Raman's discovery about how light scatters, so make a rainbow with a glass of water and a sunny window. Kids can draw the colors in order and learn why the sky looks blue.

Get ready for March, too. LA Marathon weekend is right around the corner, and the LA Kids Run is Saturday, March 6, 2027, at 9:45 a.m. at Dodger Stadium, recommended for kids ages 3 to 8. Read our 2027 Los Angeles Marathon weekend guide for families for all the race weekend details.
