Distance learning is a big challenge for many parents! Not only we have to supervise our children, many of us have to work, cook, and clean while kids are staying home. Below we came up with some ideas to help your kids transition to the new school year, including tips for helping them with distance learning. The most important thing to remember is to start with firm and clear expectations. Send the kids to bed early and at the same time every night at least one week before school starts. Set Regular wake-up time, and get the kids ready for school as if they are physically going to school. Make sure kids have a healthy breakfast before start of the day. Designate a quiet room or an area at your home for distance learning. Write down your expectations and house rules and talk to your kids before school starts. Be very clear about consequences for not following rules. Make sure to follow a daily schedule. Set parental control on your kids' devices so they can't access other programs or sites during school hours other than school programs and websites. Make sure your kids have enough time to snack between classes. Go for short walks during break time so kids can get some of their energy out. If you work at home, designate a specific time that you will be available to help your kids with their distance learning. Prepare a snack, lunch, and dinner schedule. Take a lunch break with your kids and eat together, and talk about your day. Don't allow your kids watch TV or play games during the week. Get the more challenging homework out of the way first when they have more energy, and leave the easy work for later. Award them for following your rules at the end of each school day. Avoid yelling and screaming; instead be firm and follow through with your consequences. Make sure that they have enough physical activities after a long day of virtual learning. Listen to music, do yoga, or mediate with your kids for at least 20 minutes every night before bedtime. Be kind to yourself and your kids during these difficult times. L.A. County officials announced today that beginning on Monday, September 14th, schools (K-12) may offer in-school services for a small cohort of students with individualized education plans (IEPs), students requiring instruction for English as a Second Language (ESL) or students needing assessments or specialized in-school services. The qualified students are allowed to be on campus as long as the school is able to fully implement the health officer’s reopening protocols, according to public health officials. Los Angeles County is not opening the waiver program for TK-6 at this time. All other students will continue with remote learning. To keep summer going, the Annenberg Community Beach House keeps the pool open every weekends in September from 11 am to 5 pm. Pool, parking, and canopy reservations are also available for weekends in September. Pool and parking reservations may be made 1-3 days in advance beginning at 7am on Reserve Santa Monica. In September, pool and parking passes must be redeemed by 11am. You can also enjoy Pop-Up Pool Days on Friday, September 6th from 1pm to 7pm, and Monday, September 30th from 10am to 5pm for all who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah. As Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and some Los Angeles Schools designate September 30th as a local holiday, and the weather is favorable, Annenberg Community Beach House adds this pop-up to their schedule offering many an opportunity to enjoy the pool. The public pool at the Beach House features marble around the deck with beautiful tiles that were restored by hand. The pool and pool deck are complimented by a new Pool House, with changing areas, lockers, and a second floor view deck that offers spectacular views of Santa Monica Bay. Kids under age 8 and 4’ in height must be accompanied by an adult in the water at all times. Kids under age 12 must be supervised by an adult at all times. Children requiring diapers must wear a swim diaper in the water. Swim suits must be worn in the water. Swimmers must shower before entering the water. Los Angeles County is reopening more venues as we have reached the red tier! The wait is finally over! LA County is reaching red tier by Monday, and more venues such as indoor dining, movie theaters, indoor gyms, and indoor museums can reopen with restrictions as early as Monday, March 15, 2021. Movie theaters can reopen indoors at 25% capacity with reserved seating only where each group is seated with at least 6 feet of distance in all directions between any other groups. Restaurants can reopen for indoor dining at 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever is less. The tables must be at least eight feet apart, with each table having not more than 6 people. Bars that don't serve food can't reopen yet. But Wineries, breweries and tasting rooms that don't serve food can reopen outdoors. Also, up to three households can now dine together outdoors. Gyms can reopen indoor activities at 10% capacity. But saunas and steam rooms remain closed. Museums, Aquariums & Zoos can reopen indoor areas at 25% capacity. Theme Parks have got the green light to reopen starting April 1, 2021 at a limited capacity Capacity for stores has doubled to 50% capacity, and grocery stores can now go back to full capacity. California Theme Parks, like Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, LEGOLAND, and Universal Studio can reopen as soon as April 1, 2021! Today health officials announced that certain outdoor activities including California theme parks can reopen as early as April 1st with restrictions. Theme parks are required to follow health restrictions and they can only open at 15% capacity. The limited reopening would not include indoor rides, and theme parks would only be open to California residents upon opening. Disneyland Resort President made an statement today after the good news. "With responsible Disney safety protocols already implemented around the world, we can't wait to welcome our guests back and look forward to sharing an opening date soon." Underwood Family Farms' Pick-Your-Own Fields are now open daily for Spring with seasonal fruit and vegetables available for picking. Your kids would absolutely love going to the fields and pick fresh strawberries, oranges, mandarins and so many other fruits and vegetables at the farm. It's a great way to spend a day outdoors! Tractor rides to the fields are available to take you to the fields, and are included with admission. Once you get to the fields, the fun begins. You can either take your own bags or pick up bags and containers at the farm. There are signs that direct you as which crops are ready to be picked. You can sample the crops (but it is requested that you do not make a meal out of them). From your two year old to the adults, you will have a blast walking through the fields and pick up what is available in the each season.
