  • Latest News on Reopening of Schools!

Today, April 27, 2020, Austin Beutner, Superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District updated families regarding reopening of schools. It has been 25 school days since closure of schools and transition to distance learning. Beutner said, "Reopening of schools will be a gradual process with a schedule and school day that may be different. But before that can happen, health authorities have to solve some very real issues for the safe return of our school community." He added that 75,000+ employees serve the needs of almost 700,000 students who live with another couple of million people. And the following questions need to be answered before safe return to schools: Will testing be available for all employees, students and their families? Who will pay for testing? He continued, "A robust system of testing and contact tracing will need to be in place before any serious talk begins about reopening schools.... We closed school facilities on March 13 so our schools did not become a petri dish and cause the virus to spread in the communities we serve. That's worked. We do not want to reverse that in the hasty return to schools." LAUSD will remain in close coordination with state and local authorities for guidance on the issues. Meanwhile, LAUSD will continue to provide meals to students and their families through Garb and Go Centers. For more information about reopening of the schools and the latest news, visit LAUSD's official website.

  • We Maybe A Few Weeks Away From Relaxing Stay At Home Orders, Newsom Says!

During his briefing today, governor Gavin Newsom addressed the stay at home orders, and the possible relaxing of the orders in a "few weeks". We are so close to changing the stay at home orders and have been making so much progress, he said as he urged citizens to continue to stay at home and practice social distancing. He added, "I hope it's in the next few weeks, I believe it will be, but that is based on our behaviors in the next few weeks so let's get there together and let's get there in a much stronger way than we otherwise could." "To slow down the spread of COVID-19 and keep bending the curve, we have to manage our behavior accordingly", he said, "that means not flocking to any open piece of coastline as soon as it gets hot outside." On April 14th, Newsom outlined six key goals to opening of the state: The ability to monitor and protect our communities through testing, contact tracing, isolation, and supporting those who are positive or who’ve been exposed. The ability to prevent infection in at-risk individuals. Can we identify outbreaks in nursing homes, prisons, and facilities for those with disabilities? And are we also able to care for older Californians and the medically vulnerable who are living in their own homes? The ability of the hospital and health systems to handle surges. Do we have the bed capacity, staff, PPE, and ventilators we’ll need? The ability to develop therapeutics to meet the demand. The ability for businesses, schools, and other facilities to support physical distancing. Do they have the guidelines and equipment they need? The ability to determine when to bring back Stay at Home measures. Can we track the right data to know when to do so, and can we communicate these orders effectively? Today, he added that the reopening would come in stages, and would depend on building infrastructure required to meet the six goals and holding the line on our stay at home orders. You can see his entire briefing today in the video below: For more videos like this, you can go to NBC News' Youtube Channel.

  • Social Distancing Will Continue Through Summer!

White House coronavirus response coordinator Deborah Birx said Sunday, Social distancing must continue through the summer, even as some states began moving to ease shutdown and stay-at-home guidelines. She said that for the next several months, any gatherings or commercial activity would need to incorporate physical separation between people. Vice President Mike Pence spurred hopes for a revival of summertime activity when he predicted last week in a radio interview that the pandemic would be “behind us” by the Memorial Day weekend, less than a month from now. While President Trump has said he is leaving it up to governors how soon to allow businesses to reopen, he also signaled support earlier this month for protesters in a handful of states who demand a speedy end to restrictions. Per Los Angeles Times, most polls indicate that a majority of Americans want to proceed more cautiously to lift restrictions on activity. But governors whose states are easing restrictions said they felt confident in their decision-making. Despite the U.S. jobless rate hitting Depression-era levels last week, with unemployment claims topping 26 million, Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin said Sunday he expected a strong rebound by the U.S. economy over the summer. “I think as we begin to reopen the economy in May and June you’re going to see the economy really bounce back in July, August, September,” Mnuchin said on Fox.

  • California Employees Are Eligible To Earn More For Working Less!

If your hours have been cut due to COVID-19, you may still get full aid relief through the CARES Act. California workers who see their hours cut as little as 10% due to the coronavirus outbreak are eligible to receive the entire $600-a-week federal subsidy offered in the $2-trillion federal rescue package, state officials and employment experts say. That means in some cases, workers in California — and across the country — could end up temporarily receiving far more from the government for those lost hours than they would have earned by working them. “If employers knew about this option for their workers, there’s a lot of free money floating around, and it’s shocking that so few people take it up,” said Till Von Wachter, a UCLA economics professor. “There are substantial financial gains and opportunities for workers in the current environment, and it’s just crazy that nobody’s taking it up.” While it was widely known that the flat $600-a-week federal unemployment supplement would be temporarily paid to workers who lost their jobs during the pandemic, it was less understood — including by some lawmakers — that the payment would also apply to any worker receiving prorated unemployment benefits because their hours had been reduced through a so-called work-sharing or short-time program. “As long as you are receiving at least $1 in unemployment insurance, you are eligible for the $600,” Employment Development Department spokesperson Aubrey Henry said. • 5 Smart Ways to Balance Work and Family Life!

Today’s “always-on” culture coupled with sluggish wage increases and the rising cost of living has made it difficult for workers to achieve a healthy work and family life balance. It would be easy to say that you should just keep your personal and professional lives separate but this might not be possible so instead, learn to be flexible when necessary and find ways to balance these aspects of your daily life. A healthy work and family life balance will allow you to achieve your career goals without sacrificing time with your family. 1. Create a Family Calendar Juggling your work obligations with your kids’ soccer practice sessions, piano lessons, dentist appointments and PTA meetings can be challenging and stressful. A family calendar is a simple way to help you and your family figure out your schedules together. You can mark these events on a calendar at home or use a shared Google calendar. A shared calendar is particularly effective if you have several kids as you can input recurring events for weekly sports practice sessions and use color codes to keep track of everyone’s schedules. Calendar and productivity apps can be a lifesaver for parents these days as they help you and your family become organized and tackle trouble spots easily and efficiently. 2. Build an Effective Team at Work A lot of managers feel stressed and overworked as they put in several hours of overtime on a regular basis in order to meet deadlines. In most cases, this is because of inadequate delegation skills where they take a lot of the extra tasks themselves instead of delegating them to their team. Don’t take on additional tasks because it’s easier to do it yourself as this will increase your burden as well as stifle the growth of your team. 3. Commit to Screen-Free Family Meals Modern life is hectic for parents and kids alike and it can be tough to stay connected. Family meals offer the perfect occasion for everyone to relax, catch up with each other and spend quality time together. Commit to screen-free family meals where all electronic devices are put on silent mode and kept away as this encourages healthy communication during your meals. Several studies show that watching TV during dinner is negatively associated with dietary healthfulness and emotional atmosphere. If it’s not possible to stick to daily screen-free meals, try to include at least a few screen-free meals every week. 4. Find Time for Family Fun A recent poll found that 80% of people continue working once they get home from work in order to complete unfinished work or meet tight deadlines. Bringing work home might be unavoidable but you can still find ways to manage your work and still find time for family fun. For instance, instead of ruining your weekend completing projects, you can set aside time each day when you get home to help you stay on top of deadlines which will leave your weekends free for family outings. You can plan activities based on your kids’ interests to give your family adventures and memories that will be cherished for life. 5. Take Time for Yourself Most of us focus on finding a balance between our work and family life without considering our own needs. You need time to recharge so find ways to enjoy a little alone time on a regular basis. Indulge in a short meditation session before going to bed and/or wake up early on weekends for a leisurely stroll. Self-care helps to lower stress levels and become a calmer and healthier parent. It also teaches your children the importance of self-care which will help them make healthier choices as they grow up. A work and family life balance is not a one-time endeavor and you will need to consciously make an effort to maintain this balance. According to the experts at "What To Expect", simple things like a surprise visit to your child’s daycare will allow both of you to enjoy some unexpected time together. You can also plan a surprise trip to a family farm where your kids can interact with farm animals, go on pony rides and enjoy the true farm experience. Brainstorm with your partner to come up with fun ideas and new experiences that all of you can enjoy as a family. Once your kids are older, you can encourage them to come up with suggestions for family activities as this will improve their self-confidence.
