From the moment that I walked into this absolute treasure on Pico and Doheny, I was struck by the calm, and the warmth of the ambiance. It was apparent that the love that the owners poured into this Los Angeles landmark over 40 years ago is as palpable as ever.
The newly renovated space allows for parts of the past to peak through in the form of autographed bricks from the Golden age of Hollywood, when this was a popular Italian restaurant, and mementos spanning the time when Mrs. Adler was at the helm.
The restaurant is a pleasant place with great food, and fantastic service; much like a family space, inclusive, and cozy. There was a reverence for the care that its‘ creators brought to it; it is more than just a nice place to eat.
We were at the restaurant for a Sunday Brunch and ordered the French Toast, Latkes, and Eggs Benedict, which were all beautifully plated and exceptionally delicious! It was such a relaxing Sunday, eating in tranquility with the soothing sound of the piano in the background.
The story is that when Bernie, and Leah Adler (Spielberg's Mom) opened the doors to The Milky Way in 1977, "their vision was to offer fine kosher food to the Jewish Community at a time when such a thing didn't exist in Los Angeles. Leah wanted to introduce interesting fare to many who had never tasted dishes like Cajun, Mexican, or Thai. Shortly after opening, it was very apparent that the main attraction wasn't just the food, but was Leah herself!"
"From the framed family photographs to the movie posters headlined by Adler’s son director Steven Spielberg, dining inside really feels like stepping into Adler’s own kitchen." --Eater Los Angeles
