It is an undeniable fact that kids love the water, and more specifically, the ocean. But, the big waves, large crowds, and cleanliness can all factor into whether you actually want to take your family to the beach or not. So, let us take a few of the not so fun factors off of your list. Choose from our five favorite beaches below that are incredibly family friendly. Whether a playground, clean bathrooms, or shallow water is the highest on your list, we’ll make sure you know what you’re getting into before hitting the sand. Santa Monica State Beach First off, we love for kids to experience all a city has to offer, and the Santa Monica Pier is well known for being a wonderful attraction. So, head to Ocean Park Beach tower 26 for the most kid friendly spot around. There is a solid playground, an abundance of bathrooms and changing facilities, as well as a grassy area for when the sand just gets too hot. The ease of having a myriad of eating options at the Pier lets you know that the kids won’t go hungry if you didn’t have the time or desire to bring snacks along. If you’re hoping for a little more kid-only space, check out the neighboring Annenberg Community Beach House. They also have a playground, pool, and planned activities to keep the kiddos entertained, allowing you to take a few minutes to breathe. There is also a restaurant on site, Back to the Beach Cafe, for when the kids get hungry. One of the marvelous parts about this, as well, is that you can reserve a parking spot online, allowing the stress of parking and paying melt away. Lastly, their bathrooms might be the cleanest on the California coast, so enjoy! Mother’s Beach If the name Mother’s Beach doesn’t sound like a good place for the family, I’m not sure what you’re hoping for. Mother’s Beach is a spectacular sheltered spot in Marina Del Rey. The water is shallow, and the kids have a roped off area specifically for them. During the busy summer months, there is a lifeguard on duty to give you an extra set of eyes for safety as well. There is a playground nearby, as well as kayak and paddle board rentals for those with kids needing a little more adventure in their lives. So, if you have a wider range of ages needing something to do, Mother’s Beach is a great choice for you. Malibu Lagoon State Beach For the most variety of beach experience, head on over to Malibu Lagoon State Beach. This lagoon is a bird sanctuary, as well as a great spot for surfing. If your kids are mesmerized by watching these things, it’s a perfect spot. There’s plenty of sand here as well, making it easy to spread out and stake out a place just for you and yours. There are rocks along the beach for the little ones to play on as well. This beach is right next to the Malibu pier, allowing you to have great food, drinks, and dessert whenever you need a snack. Between the shallow water and variety of people and animals to watch here, the family can enjoy a full but relaxing day at Malibu Lagoon State Beach. Manhattan Beach The name says alludes to it, but Manhattan Beach gives you the best of both worlds. With the accessibility of the city and all it has to offer plus miles of stunning beach, this is a perfect California beach. It is great for families because of the clean restrooms and proximity of snacks and parking. You won’t have to tote the kids towels and trowels far to get to the sandy shore here. In addition, when the kids need some AC, head over to the free Roundhouse Aquarium at the end of the pier. This will be a nice diversion to the afternoon, letting the kids explore the local ecosystem and learn about the ocean. The beach volleyball scene is also impressive here, so whether you have an aspiring star or a little one who just loves to bounce the ball, there will always be some action to be found here. You can explore the local trails leading to and from the beach, which will lead you to plenty of tidepools that kids can play in. If you even need more adventure, check out the sea caves that are tucked in the rocks. This park is a little more off the beaten path, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding plenty of space for yourself. There are great restaurants nearby to keep you satiated as well. How long will it take before the general public can get vaccinated in Los Angeles County? COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna are already in the market, and are available for healthcare providers, but when can you get vaccinated if you are not a healthcare provider, and live in Los Angeles County? This is a question that most of us want to know desperately. We have done some research, and have made it very easy for you to find basic answers to your most urgent questions about the COVID-19 vaccination. First you need to find out which Phase and which Tier you will fall into, and when you have that information, it is easy to find out when COVID-19 vaccine will be available in your sector. Should I get my kids vaccinated? Let me tell you already that the vaccines, by both companies, are not recommended for children under 16, and at this time you should not even worry about getting your kids vaccinated. When will the vaccine be available to me? We have found a vaccine calculator, in which you can plug in where you live, your age group, and potential health factors to find out which phase and tier you will fall into, and how many people might be in line before it is your turn to get vaccinated. Phase 1A - Tier 1 - 3 Healthcare workers and residents of skilled nursing facilities It is estimated that everyone in Phase 1A will have been offered at least one dose of vaccine by late January or early February 2021, per County of Los Angeles Public Health. Phase 1B - Tier 1 Individuals 75 years and older, and individuals who work in Education, Childcare, Emergency services, and Food and agriculture. It is estimated that vaccination will begin for those in Phase 1B in early February and you should be offered at least one dose of vaccine by late March 2021, per County of Los Angeles Public Health. 1B - Tier 2 Individuals 65-74 years of age, and individuals who are at risk of exposure at work in Transportation and logistics, Industrial, commercial, residential, and sheltering facilities and services, and Critical manufacturing. Also individuals who are incarcerated and are homeless. It is estimated that vaccination will begin for those in Phase 1B in early February and you should be offered at least one dose of vaccine by late March 2021, per County of Los Angeles Public Health. Phase 1C Individuals 50-64 years old, people 16-49 years of age who have an underlying health condition or disability which increases their risk of severe COVID-19; and those at risk of exposure at work in water and wastewater, defense, energy, chemical and hazardous materials, communications and IT, financial services, government operations, and community-based essential functions. It is estimated that vaccination will begin for those in Phase 1C in March 2021, and that you should be offered at least one dose of vaccine by late April or early May 2021, per County of Los Angeles Public Health. Phase 2 Individuals between the ages of 16-49 years old without high-risk medical conditions. It is estimated that vaccination will begin for those in Phase 2 by mid-May or early June 2021, per County of Los Angeles Public Health. (Happy Birthday to me! Latest News about Vaccination Efforts in California On January 11, 2021, Governor Newsom announced that the state of California would be stepping up its coronavirus vaccination efforts this week, opening mass vaccination sites at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, Petco Park in San Diego and Cal Expo in Sacramento. Newsom said the state's goal is to vaccinate 1 million more people by the weekend. The state wants to expand the types of health care professionals who can give vaccinations to include dentists, pharmacy technicians and National Guard teams. Grand Park’s Winter Glow returns for the park’s second annual nighttime art display from December 6, 2019 through December 25, 2019, offering an immersive experience that will span two county locations this holiday season expanding across Grand Avenue to include the newly renovated Music Center Plaza. Grand Park’s Winter Glow will feature installations by L.A.-based artists from across the county. Each artist will design and install magical light attractions for the public to enjoy as they stroll through Grand Park and The Music Center Plaza. Familiar pathways and historic fountains will be transformed into exciting new discoveries with the latest in light and projection technology. Some of the curated large-scale installations will be hands-on and interactive as additional complementary light displays make Hope Street to Hill Street “glow” in the winter sky. All you need to know about San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park Reopening The San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are reopening their doors on June 20, 2020. During the initial reopening phase. You will be able to experience wildlife with their families, stroll among diverse habitats, and take part in fun, educational activities that bring you closer to the natural world. Each park will operate with limited on-grounds capacity and reduced hours of operation, with limited shopping, dining, and other experiences available at both parks. You can expect smaller crowds on weekdays, but may have to wait for admission on busier weekends. Entry to the parks will be on a first-come, first-served basis until they reach their daily reduced on-grounds attendance limit. Once the on-grounds attendance limit is reached, as guests exit the parks, the same number of waiting guests will be admitted. As you approach the Zoo's entrance, you will see signs in green or orange. Watch for them throughout the Zoo to remind you of safe practices, and how to navigate the grounds. At the Zoo, you will visit a Welcome Tent to answer a few brief health screening questions before you enter the turnstiles. At the Safari Park, you will answer health screening questions upon arrival in the parking lot. Bring a protective mask covering your mouth and nose, except for when dining, for each member of your family. You are also required to maintain a six-foot distance between you and other people. Some experiences, programs, and animal viewing areas may be closed but there is still plenty to see and do! Tickets for tours, Safaris, and other premium experiences can be purchased before you arrive. Zoo parking will be limited. At the Safari Park, the $15 general parking fee will be waived initially, and paid parking will resume later. Zoo continues to “Bring the Zoo to You” with "Wild for the Planet", a virtual celebration from Earth Day to Endangered Species Day with behind-the-scenes animal videos, animal draw-alongs, animal puppet video series, and curated content by animal experts. Every spring, the L.A. Zoo’s annual “Wild for the Planet” celebrates all things animal, natural, and sustainable from Earth Day on April 22 to Endangered Species Day on May 15. Throughout this year’s virtual “Wild for the Planet” festivities, the L.A. Zoo is providing an array of activities accessible to anyone seeking engaging and educational animal-related content while at home. Carefully curated by the L.A. Zoo team, this online resource brings together animal videos, nature-related at-home crafts, exclusive animal coloring books available for download, and more. Endangered Species Draw-Alongs With Brian Kesinger The L.A. Zoo has partnered with veteran Walt Disney Animation and Marvel comic artist Brian Kesinger on a series of Facebook Live animal draw-alongs spotlighting endangered species that the Los Angeles Zoo has brought back from the brink of extinction. Taking place on four consecutive Saturdays at 1 p.m., these engaging Facebook Live tutorials show viewers how to draw the California condor (April 18), the mountain yellow-legged frog (April 25), peninsular pronghorn (May 2), and the western lowland gorilla (May 9). Join live on Facebook or catch up with archived episodes on the L.A. Zoo YouTube channel. Beastly Ball Annual Fundraiser Goes Virtual on May 15 The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association’s annual “Beastly Ball” has been the Zoo’s signature star-studded fundraising event for decades.  This year, due to COVID-19, it will be a virtual event taking place on Endangered Species Day, May 15, 2020 at 6 p.m. The Virtual Beastly Ball will include special virtual animal experiences, celebrity guest appearances, and exciting silent and live auction opportunities. ZOO-m Animal Chats with Swazzle Puppet Studio - A New Video Series Kids can join Swazzle’s environmental superhero Ricky Raccoon as he virtually visits his animal puppet friends and uncovers wild facts about creatures large and small in this new online original video series, created exclusively for the L.A. Zoo. Episode 1, “Yellow-Faced Bumblebee” will debut on Friday, April 24 on the L.A. Zoo’s Wild for the Planet page. Animal Conservation Videos Whether at the Zoo or in the field, the L.A. Zoo works to save species every day. From the release of hundreds of endangered tadpoles to studying giraffe conservation, the L.A. After nearly two decades in the Jewish Federation building, the Zimmer Children’s Museum by ShareWell closed its doors to the public, and head to its new location, The Santa Monica Place, with a brand new name, Cayton Children's Museum, and so many exciting changes. THE MUSEUM The state of the art space in the Santa Monica Mall features 21,000 square feet of discovery-based exhibits, a theatre, art studios, workshops, classes, camps, and a year-long calendar of arts and cultural programming for toddlers to youth. The space is filled with immersive elements including a full-size helicopter, fire truck, and veterinary clinic. The kids get to shop for groceries, eat in a café, play chef, go to the vet, become firefighters, or pretend to be a pilot. "The Together We" section offers group activities and team building, and the "Reflect On" section is where children learn to better connect with nature. You’ll also find the “Courage Climber,” an entire level made from nets, which kids find extremely fun to explore. There is a separate space for infants to 2 years old children to explore through touch, and is intended to help them strengthen their coordination. LOCATION The museum is on the third floor of the open-air Santa Monica Place mall located at 395 Santa Monica Place, Suite 374. The Mall has on-site parking, and is also located at the final stop of the Metro Expo line. HOURS The Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm, and on Sundays from 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm. COST General admission is $14 per person for adults and children ages 1 to 12. The Cayton runs on a timed-entry ticketing system! Each ticket is good for a two-hour window of play. You can reserve your tickets on line, or buy at the door. Children under 1 are free.
