- La Brea Tar Pits Selected as One of the First 100 Geological Heritage Sites!
With fossils excavated, prepared, researched, and put on display at La Brea Tar Pits, this tar pit is the only active and urban Ice Age excavation site in the world. Because of its dynamic science, the site is a unique window into the future. Visitors may witness the excavation of Ice Age plants and animals that were trapped and preserved in the seeps outside the Museum. Inside, scientists and volunteers clean, repair, and identify those very fossils. Some of the finest specimens are displayed and available for research, including saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, dire wolves, mammoths, and mastodons, as well as microfossils of small animals and plants. Los Angeles environmental change over the last 50,000 years of Earth's history has been examined using these collections, as has the planet. In October 2022, the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) will be holding its 60th-anniversary conference in Zumaia, Basque Coast, Spain, at the UNESCO Global Geopark, to announce the First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites. La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park has been selected as one of the 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites by one of the world's largest scientific organizations, the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). More than one million geoscientists from 121 member countries participate in the IUGS. As part of its new designation in 2022, the IUGS will declare 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites. They are key locations with geological components and processes of international scientific importance and those that have played a substantial role in geological science. The Pleistocene (the "Ice Age") fossil site at La Brea Tar Pits has been acknowledged as the most significant paleontological site in the world. La Brea Tar Pits has also helped scientists and the general public better understand the Pleistocene time period. According to Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, President and Director of the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County, La Brea Tar Pits, a one-of-a-kind site for scientific research into the past that has inspired pop culture from the current La Brea TV series to the Ice Age animated movies, is a source for understanding climate change in our own time. La Brea's contribution to science and the efforts of paleontologists, preparators, and volunteers during its more than 100 years of research and excavation have been duly recognized by the international scientific community, according to Bettison-Varga. LaBrea Tar Pits is an entry to the Ice Age, where paleontologists dig for plant and animal fossils trapped in asphalt seeps over thousands of years as a living laboratory for the local and global community to discover groundbreaking research. In addition to being the world's only ongoing urban Ice Age excavation, LaBrea Tar Pits is a living laboratory. As a result, one can learn about science as it happens here. Outside, visitors can see fossils being unearthed from asphalt seeps as they are uncovered. Inside the Museum, scientists and volunteers cleanup, repair, identify and study those very fossils. The finest specimens are on display, and all of them are available for study. Ancient saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, dire wolves, mammoths, and mastodons are just some of the animals that were discovered and studied. These collections and their locale provide a unique resource for understanding environmental change in Los Angeles and the world during the last 50,000 years of Earth history, and over 400 scientific publications have been written about them. La Brea Tar Pits have been formed through a series of uplifts and faults over the last 50,000 years, as crude petroleum seeped up to the surface of shallow pools that entrapped and preserved millions of fossils representing hundreds of plant, invertebrate, and vertebrate species. It has been the subject of extensive geologic, paleontological, and archaeological research for over 150 years. A master planning process that includes public engagement, master planning, design, and future construction will be carried out at the Tar Pits campus, which includes the asphalt seeps, the La Brea Tar Pits park, and the George C. Page Museum building. According to La Brea Tar Pits CEO Howard Phipps, the reimagining of the site aims to demystify the science and educate visitors about the impacts of climate change, both in the past and present. NHMLAC guarantees that La Brea Tar Pits will remain inclusive and accessible to all, whether it be a child wandering past the still bubbling asphalt or a neighbor running past." La Brea Tar Pits' research today ranges from studying the biology and behavior of extinct creatures to documenting the fossils themselves to establishing whether ecosystems have been altered as a result of climate change over the past 50,000 years. This last line of inquiry has significance, as it can provide critical benchmarks for understanding how plants and animals will be affected as a result of human-induced climate change. The La Brea Tar Pits are a group of tar pits around which the city of Los Angeles, California, USA, formed. La Brea Tar Pits' asphalt seeps are the world's only continually operating and urban Ice Age excavation site. The site is a unique portal into active science, where fossils are discovered, prepared, researched, and displayed. Visitors may observe excavators unearthing Ice Age plants and animals that were trapped and preserved during the seeps outside the Museum. Inside, scientists and volunteers clean, repair, and identify those fossils. The most exceptional specimens are on display and accessible for study: saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, dire wolves, mammoths, and mastodons, to name a few. These collections represent an unparalleled resource for learning about environmental change in Los Angeles and the world over the past 50,000 years of Earth's history.
- Fentanyl Pills Found Packaged in Candy: What to Avoid This Halloween!
Authorities say sealed packages of the powerful opioid fentanyl were found hidden in candy at Los Angeles International Airport, reported KTLA. Police found 12,000 suspected fentanyl pills packaged in several bags of candy at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Officials said they found the pills inside boxes of Sweetarts, Skittles and Whoppers. Fentanyl is often seen in blue, greenish, or pale-colored counterfeit pills. There may be other colors. These pills may be marked as “M30” and sometimes as “K9,” “215,” and “v48.” Fentanyl may also be in white powders. In the spookiest time of year, we need to be extra cautious with all the news of Fentanyl Pills in Packaged Candy. After all, tricks and treats can be hazardous if not handled with care. Whether you are a parent preparing your child, or a teen going out, these tips will keep everyone safe this October 31st. What Candy to Avoid This Halloween Fake pills laced with fentanyl are beginning to look like candy. This is also known as rainbow fentanyl, and it can come in “a variety of bright colors, shapes, and sizes.” You should always avoid homemade candy since you have no way of knowing what’s in it. You can also steer clear of candy that has an unwrapped wrapper. It would be best to avoid candy that is crusted or has powder on it. Always double, and triple-check your children's candy for suspiciously packaged or unpackaged items. Suggestions include allowing kids to only take candy only from trusted neighbors, family, and friends. Set aside a time after Halloween to go through the collected candy by children. Before letting your kids eat their treats, make sure you know what is in their bags. Carefully, examine each candy and put aside any suspicious treats. If you want to be extra careful, you can buy mixed bags of candy and switch their collected candy with the candy that you have purchased from the store yourself. Trick or Treat and Other Safety Tips on Halloween When it comes to the actual trick or treating, there are some things to keep in mind to stay safe. First, parents should always accompany their children. Even if you live in a remote area, your children should never go out alone. If you are out with a group of kids, make sure you stay together and don’t walk too far from each other. You should have a predetermined meeting place in case your children get separated from you. It’s a good idea to meet up in a public place. It’s also helpful if everyone has a phone charger with them and has saved everyone’s number into their phones just in case. If someone doesn’t want you in their yard, respect their wishes and move on. And remember, you can always call the police if you feel unsafe. Set a curfew for your trick-or-treaters if they are older and they go out without parents. And talk to your children about Halloween safety before they head out. Make sure they know not to eat any candy before getting home and examining the candy first. Also remind your teen, to stay in well-lit areas, keep their cell phones on, and avoid wearing headphones. If you have a teen who is going to a Halloween party, it is very important to remind them not to ever take any drinks from strangers (even if it is non-alcoholic). We hope these Halloween safety tips will help you enjoy the spooky night of Halloween while keeping yourself and your loved ones safe and sound! Remember, it’s not just about trick-or-treating or dressing up as scary characters. It’s also about behaving responsibly and being mindful of your surroundings. So be careful, stay safe, and have a frightfully good time on Halloween!

- The Spooktacular History of Halloween!
There’s something magical about autumn. The leaves change colors, kids go back to school, and the smell of pumpkin spice fills the air. Halloween is fast approaching, which means it’s time to get spooky! What better way to get in the spirit than by taking a deeper look at this ghoulish holiday with a scary history? In this blog post, you will learn all about the spooktacular history of Halloween. From its roots as a Celtic Samhain celebration to modern pop culture interpretations of this spirited day, we cover it all! So grab your cauldron and come explore the creepy past of this awesome Autumn holiday. What is Halloween? Halloween is a culture-wide holiday celebrated every October 31st. It’s a day for kids and adults to dress up in spooky costumes, go trick-or-treating, attend parties, and carve jack o’lanterns. There’s plenty of history behind the spooky holiday we celebrate today. Halloween’s origins are deeply rooted in ancient pagan traditions. The Celts celebrated Samhain, a festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the “darker half” of the year. During this time, people would build bonfires, wear costumes, and perform sacrificial ceremonies in order to ward off evil spirits. Halloween’s scary history While Halloween has changed a lot over the past 2,000 years, it’s important to keep in mind that many of the traditions we celebrate today are relatively new. The Celts celebrated Samhain with bonfires, costumed feasts, and sacrificial rites. It is believed that these rituals were meant to ward off evil spirits and welcome good spirits into the village. While these traditions are no longer practiced, they’re the basis for many modern rituals and traditions. For example, the jack o’lantern is thought to have originated from the Celts placing candles in turnips to ward off evil spirits. Halloween Comes to America Halloween is a great example of a holiday that has changed a lot as it has traveled around the world. Because of the strict Protestant belief systems in colonial New England, Halloween celebrations were extremely limited. Halloween was much more common in Maryland and the southern colonies. When European ethnic groups’ beliefs and customs mixed with those of American Indians, a distinctively American Halloween was born. The first Halloween parties were known as “play parties,” which were celebrations of the harvest and were open to the public. Neighbors would tell ghost stories, predict one another's futures, dance, and sing. Ghost stories and all sorts of mischief-making were part of colonial Halloween celebrations. By the middle of the 19th century, annual autumn festivities were commonplace, but Halloween was not yet celebrated nationwide. The celebration of Halloween became popular nationwide in the second half of the 19th century, thanks to the millions of Irish fleeing the Irish Potato Famine. Trick or Treat? Or Just Treat? One of the most popular Halloween traditions is trick or treat. When it started in America, it was mainly a way for people to get rid of surplus candy. But it wasn’t long before it evolved into the tradition of children dressing up and going door-to-door asking for candy. Treat or trick is not a new concept either. It just has a different name. The tradition of giving out sweets to children on Halloween goes as far back as the 1920s. The tradition of children dressing up dates back to the end of the 1800s. But the ultimate question that begs an answer is, who came first? The treat or the trick? Well, the trick came first. The treat came a little later. Best Ways to Celebrate Halloween So, now that you’re a Halloween expert, you’re probably wondering about some good ways to celebrate it. There are tons of options available to you, but here are a few ideas just in case you need a little inspiration. Trick-or-treating - If you’re going to go trick-or-treating, you’ll want to make sure it’s safe. Make sure you go with a group of people and don’t ever go alone. Also, keep an eye out for houses that don’t participate in the tradition. Host a Halloween party - Hosting a Halloween party is a great way to celebrate. You can do it indoors or outdoors and have it catered or make snacks ahead of time so that you don’t have to cook. Go to a haunted house - If you want to celebrate Halloween in a more extreme way, you can try going to a haunted house, or family-friendly Halloween event. Watch Spooky Movies - It's fun to watch horror movies that aren't your typical scary fare. These can be especially fun for younger kids. Go to Pumpkin Patches - There are few things as magical as a trip to the pumpkin patch, especially if you have kids. They’re the perfect combination of fall activities that won’t scare your children and still give them a ton of fun and memorable moments. For more fun ideas, see our Halloween Guide.
