Why Families May Love It
One of the nicest things about CicLAvia is that you do not have to commit to the entire route. Families with younger children can explore one neighborhood or a short stretch, while older kids and confident riders can cover much more ground.
Along the route, the event’s hubs provide practical amenities such as free water-refill stations, ADA-accessible restrooms, basic bike repair and bike parking. Free pedicab rides are also offered on a first-come, first-served basis, which can be helpful if little legs run out of steam.
Four Helpful Hubs Along the Route
Echo Park Hub — 1632 Bellevue Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90026
Chinatown Hub — 942 N. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Little Tokyo Hub — 121 S. Central Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90012
Mariachi Plaza — 1801 E. 1st St., Los Angeles, CA 90033
Important Parent Tips Before You Go
CicLAvia recommends the route for experienced riders; a busy open-streets event is not the best place to teach a child to ride a bike for the first time.
California law requires helmets for riders under 18 on bicycles, scooters, skates and similar devices.
Bring refillable water bottles, sunscreen and hats. Water refill stations are available at the hubs.
The route includes elevation changes, so families with small children may prefer a shorter section, stroller, walking option or pedicab ride.
Use extra caution at intersections where vehicle crossings may still be permitted under traffic control.
Parking, Street Closures and Getting There
Public transportation is usually the easiest way to reach CicLAvia. Streets on the route are expected to be closed to vehicle traffic from about 7:00 AM until 6:00 PM, and parking restrictions begin earlier. If you drive, park outside the route and carefully check posted signs before leaving your car.
Before heading out, check the official CicLAvia—Heart of LA event page and route information for the latest route map, transit details, activity updates and street-closure information.
Takeaway
CicLAvia is one of those rare LA outings that can be as simple or as ambitious as your family wants it to be. Come for an hour of walking and snacks in one neighborhood, or make a full day of biking across the Heart of LA. Either way, the combination of free admission, car-free streets and multiple neighborhoods makes this an especially fun way for kids to experience Los Angeles from a completely different perspective.
