La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park has been selected as one of the 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites by one of the world's largest scientific organizations, the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). More than one million geoscientists from 121 member countries participate in the IUGS. As part of its new designation in 2022, the IUGS will declare 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites. According to Dr. Lori Bettison-Varga, President and Director of the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County, La Brea Tar Pits, a one-of-a-kind site for scientific research into the past that has inspired pop culture from the current La Brea TV series to the Ice Age animated movies, is a source for understanding climate change in our own time. La Brea's contribution to science and the efforts of paleontologists, preparators, and volunteers during its more than 100 years of research and excavation have been duly recognized by the international scientific community, according to Bettison-Varga. Ancient saber-toothed cats, giant sloths, dire wolves, mammoths, and mastodons are just some of the animals that were discovered and studied. These collections and their locale provide a unique resource for understanding environmental change in Los Angeles and the world during the last 50,000 years of Earth history, and over 400 scientific publications have been written about them. La Brea Tar Pits have been formed through a series of uplifts and faults over the last 50,000 years, as crude petroleum seeped up to the surface of shallow pools that entrapped and preserved millions of fossils representing hundreds of plant, invertebrate, and vertebrate species. It has been the subject of extensive geologic, paleontological, and archaeological research for over 150 years. A master planning process that includes public engagement, master planning, design, and future construction will be carried out at the Tar Pits campus, which includes the asphalt seeps, the La Brea Tar Pits park, and the George C. Page Museum building. According to La Brea Tar Pits CEO Howard Phipps, the reimagining of the site aims to demystify the science and educate visitors about the impacts of climate change, both in the past and present. Authorities say sealed packages of the powerful opioid fentanyl were found hidden in candy at Los Angeles International Airport, reported KTLA. Police found 12,000 suspected fentanyl pills packaged in several bags of candy at Los Angeles International Airport on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Officials said they found the pills inside boxes of Sweetarts, Skittles and Whoppers. Fentanyl is often seen in blue, greenish, or pale-colored counterfeit pills. There may be other colors. These pills may be marked as “M30” and sometimes as “K9,” “215,” and “v48.” Fentanyl may also be in white powders. In the spookiest time of year, we need to be extra cautious with all the news of Fentanyl Pills in Packaged Candy. After all, tricks and treats can be hazardous if not handled with care. Whether you are a parent preparing your child, or a teen going out, these tips will keep everyone safe this October 31st. What Candy to Avoid This Halloween Fake pills laced with fentanyl are beginning to look like candy. Trick or Treat and Other Safety Tips on Halloween When it comes to the actual trick or treating, there are some things to keep in mind to stay safe. First, parents should always accompany their children. Even if you live in a remote area, your children should never go out alone. If you are out with a group of kids, make sure you stay together and don’t walk too far from each other. You should have a predetermined meeting place in case your children get separated from you. It’s a good idea to meet up in a public place. It’s also helpful if everyone has a phone charger with them and has saved everyone’s number into their phones just in case. If someone doesn’t want you in their yard, respect their wishes and move on. And remember, you can always call the police if you feel unsafe. Set a curfew for your trick-or-treaters if they are older and they go out without parents. And talk to your children about Halloween safety before they head out. Make sure they know not to eat any candy before getting home and examining the candy first. Also remind your teen, to stay in well-lit areas, keep their cell phones on, and avoid wearing headphones. If you have a teen who is going to a Halloween party, it is very important to remind them not to ever take any drinks from strangers (even if it is non-alcoholic). We suggest using Granny Smith apples for the best results. You will also need some salt and lemon juice. Start with peeling your apples, leaving the stems intact. Carve faces using a small paring knife or a melon baller. Combine 1 cup lemon juice and 2 tablespoon salt in a bowl. Dip apples in lemon juice mixture for 5 minutes, then arrange on a baking sheet. Bake the apples at 200F for 8 hours. Turn off the oven and let apples stand in the oven overnight. Chill until ready to use. Float the apples in a punch bowl or plunk into mugs for a spooky dessert.

Feel free to sit at your table, recline on your couch, or sit in bed -- there's no right or wrong way to join. This gathering is free and open to the community. The Elf on The Shelf's Magical Holiday Journey Comes to Fairplex this Holiday Season 2020 This year Santa and his Elves are coming to you through a drive-thru holiday experience! Santa wants to make sure that all the good kids and their families stay safe this holiday season, so he is going to visit you at the Fairplex in Pomona in a very special drive-thru Christmas event. Santa will be there personally with his sleigh to bring you the spirit of Christmas. The experience will last approximately for one hour. Each car will need an Android or iphone smartphone to experience the narration and music that guides you through the experience. It is recommended that you download the app in advance and connecting your smartphone to your car's sound system. You can choose English or Spanish on the app. If you don't have a smartphone, one will be available for you during the journey, but the numbers are limited. You should email info@elfontheshelfjourney.com at least 24 hours in advance to reserve a smartphone. There will be many photo opportunities. In fact, you are encouraged to dress festively and show your Christmas spirit. There is no age limit for this event. Refreshments and merchandise will be available for purchase and will be brought to your vehicle.
