LAUSD Breaks and Long Weekends to Plan Around
The 2027-2028 calendar is generous with time off. Counting weekends, here is how much free time each break really gives your family.
Thanksgiving Break: 9 Days
LAUSD closes the entire week of Thanksgiving. With the weekends on both ends, kids are out from Saturday, Nov. 20 through Sunday, Nov. 28, 2027. That is a full nine days for a road trip, a visit with relatives or a staycation in LA.

Winter Recess: More Than 3 Weeks
The three-week winter recess is back for 2027-2028. The last school day before the break is Friday, Dec. 17, and classes resume on Monday, Jan. 10, 2028, the first day of the second semester. Including weekends, that is 23 days at home.

Spring Recess: 9 Days in April
Spring recess lands in mid-April this year, from Monday, April 10 to Friday, April 14, 2028. With weekends, kids are out April 8 through April 16. It comes later than the 2026-2027 spring break, which ran in March, so double-check any camp or travel plans you made based on last year.

What Parents Should Know About the 2027-2028 LAUSD Calendar
The LAUSD Board of Education approved this calendar on March 11, 2025, as part of a three-year plan that keeps the mid-August start and the three-week winter recess in place through 2027-2028. The district notes that the calendar is tentative and depends on the outcome of negotiations with its labor unions, so small changes are possible.
The calendar also includes a few unassigned days, such as Sept. 21 and Oct. 11, 2027. Schools are closed on those days, so plan child care the same way you would for a holiday.
