The Emperor's New Clothes

Storybook Theatre at Theatre West is back for its 43rd season, and this year the beloved children's company is dusting off its musical take on The Emperor's New Clothes. Hans Christian Andersen's tale of a vain ruler, a pair of crafty tailors and one very honest child gets a bright, giggly makeover packed with catchy songs and big comic moments that little audiences eat up.

This is not a sit-quietly-and-watch kind of show. Kids are invited to sing along, toot on kazoos and even help put on their very own fashion show right alongside the cast. Storybook Theatre has spent decades crafting gentle, interactive musicals with a positive message for children ages 3 to 9, so the story never gets scary, and the one-hour running time is just right for wiggly preschoolers and early elementary students.

Performances run every Saturday at 1:00 PM from mid-October 2026 through late May 2027 at the cozy Theatre West stage in the Cahuenga Pass, just down the road from Universal Studios. With a long run and a single ticket price for everyone, it is an easy weekend outing to plan around naps, birthdays or a visit from the grandparents.

Parents should know that the box office opens one hour before showtime for walk-up sales and will-call pickup, and that advance tickets are non-refundable. Storybook Theatre also books weekday school field trips and birthday parties, so this could be a fun option if your family is planning a celebration.
