Los Angeles Ballet's The Nutcracker

Los Angeles Ballet brings back its homegrown take on The Nutcracker, and it is full of local flavor. Clara and her Nutcracker Prince still battle the Mouse King and travel to the Land of Snow, but here the scenery nods to places LA families know well.

Look for a Spanish-style Hancock Park mansion, a snowy Big Bear scene, the Venice Beach arches and a moonlit Pacific Ocean. The choreography by company founders Thordal Christensen and Colleen Neary keeps the classic story easy to follow for first-time ballet goers.

The first weekend is at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. The run then moves to the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, where the Los Angeles Ballet Orchestra plays the score live and performances continue through Dec. 27, including a sensory-friendly matinee on Dec. 26.
