Locals' Night Drive-In Movie at the Pier

Imagine watching a movie from the front seat of your car with the Pacific right behind the screen. That is the plan for Locals' Night Drive-In Movie at the Pier, a free October edition of the Santa Monica Pier's monthly community night. This time, the Pier is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Santa Monica and Venice skaters who changed skate culture with a drive-in screening of the documentary Dogtown & Z-Boys.

Families can arrive early for plenty of pre-movie fun. Books & Cookies Musical Storytime runs from 3:30 to 5:00 PM, and a skate ramp is open from 3:30 to 7:30 PM for guests with a skate ticket and signed waiver. Tony Alva will spin a vinyl DJ set, and the evening also includes live music, a car meet and more.

You can choose how to watch. Vehicle tickets get you into the Pier parking deck for a true drive-in experience, while general chair seating works for walk-ups who bring their own blankets or folding chairs. Your family will want to claim your tickets ahead of time, since a ticket is required even though admission is free. The film is a skate-culture documentary, so parents of younger kids may want to preview it before settling in for the night.
