Dog Man: The Musical

Half dog, half cop and completely lovable, Dog Man has leaped off the pages of Dav Pilkey's wildly popular graphic novels and into a full-blown stage musical at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. Center Theatre Group is hosting TWTheatrical's production for a limited fall run, and young readers who have worn out their copies of the books will recognize plenty of familiar faces, from the furniture-chewing hero himself to his favorite villains.

The story follows best buddies George and Harold as they race to put on their own homemade show about Dog Man before lunchtime arrives. On stage, that means a parade of zany trouble: Flippy the cyborg fish unleashes an army of rampaging buildings, while Petey, the world's most evil cat, clones himself in a scheme for revenge. Catchy songs, slapstick humor and big comic-book energy keep the action bouncing from start to finish.

With a run time of about 90 minutes, including one intermission, the show is a manageable outing for little ones and a great first theater experience for kids who love to read. Weekday morning and afternoon curtains, plus weekend matinees, give your family lots of options. Center Theatre Group also designates one Saturday matinee as an ACCESS performance for guests who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or have low vision.

Parents should know the production includes haze, flashing lights, loud noises and cartoon-style action. Performances are labeled as selling fast on many dates, so booking ahead is a smart move before the run wraps up on October 18.

Metered street parking is available on Washington, Culver and Venice Boulevards; meters run until 8 PM and are free on Sundays.

Free three-hour covered parking is available at Culver City City Hall (enter on Duquesne Ave.) with validation in the theatre lobby, then $1 for each additional 30 minutes. Bring your parking ticket inside.

Additional parking structures are on Watseka Ave., Cardiff Ave. and Ince Blvd.

By transit, take the Metro E Line to Culver City Station and transfer to a Culver City bus.
