- The Art of the Brick is Now Open at the California Science Center!
The Art of the Brick featuring more than 100 works of art created from over one million LEGO bricks is now opens at the California Science Center with the world’s largest display of LEGO art. The collection features original pieces as well as re-imagined versions of some of the world's most famous art masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David, Van Gogh's Starry Night and Da Vinci's Mona Lisa. A 20-foot Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton comprised of over 80,000 LEGO bricks will be also on display and you will be able to walk under it, and come face-to-face with a giant LEGO skull. Also on display will be the fan favorite, Yellow, a life-size sculpture of a man ripping his chest open with thousands of yellow LEGO bricks cascading from the cavity. Accompanying The Art of the Brick will be an interactive exhibit The Science of the Brick that features nine activity stations for guests to design and solve LEGO brick building challenges including: Art & Architecture – Observe photos of famous buildings and structures and recreate them with LEGO bricks. Hidden Hands – Explore the science practice of mental mapping to problem solve by building a mystery object inside a box using only their sense of touch. Describe It – Build a simple object out-of-view and describes it to your kid who then tries build the same object using only the description. The Floor is Lava – Build a LEGO bridge between two raised platforms. Six Bricks – Test your problem-solving abilities by discovering how many different things you can build using only six LEGO Duplo bricks. LEGO Drag Race – Test which car design is fastest on a straight ramp and then on a second enhanced course, test the same car designs on various inclines. Tilt Maze – Create a maze on a tilt table for a wooden ball to navigate through while testing the science principles of center-of-mass, momentum, and inertia. LEGO Music Box – Use a LEGO version of staff paper to place colored LEGOs as musical notes. A camera will then photograph the “song” and image processing algorithms will turn the visual representation into music. Free Play – Use your imaginations in the free play area to make and create with bins of LEGOs and Duplo bricks. Ticket prices range from $12.75 to $19.95. Disneyland has announced that Southern California residents may visit the theme parks for as low as $67 per person, per day with 3-day, 1-park per day tickets ($199 total) just in time for opening of the Rise of the Resistance ride in Star Wars Galaxy's Edge on January 17, 2020. Save on magical visits to enjoy new shows and attractions, annual festivals and world-class entertainment at Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, along with Disney-themed accommodations at on-property hotels. They do, and their fun-filled event is packed with a bunch of cool activities, artistic workshops, and kid-friendly stagings of Mozart classics with your littlest opera lover in mind. Before the show, your little ones can get their wiggles out with a full hour of music, dance and art workshops. Then they will create special souvenirs to remember their time at the opera. You might even inspire the next great music star. Opera League volunteer Alma Guzman says “Some kids have a hidden talent which gets awakened when they get exposed to opera. They learn to appreciate music in general. That is instrumental, orchestra, voices and acting. They may find their talents. Celebrate the joyous tradition of Mexico’s most famous holiday this November for free with Cumbia legend La Sonora Dinamita con Vilma Diaz, who will headline 24th Street Theatre’s 13th annual Dia de los Muertos block party on Saturday, November 2, 2019. The event features entertainment on two stages including master conguero, bandleader and vocalist Louie Crúz Beltran; seven-piece juggernaut Tommy SpaSe and the Alchemists; Aztec dance from Huitzilopochtli; music from Son Jarochicano Los Cambalache; and more. Special guest Raul Pacheco and The Immaculate Conception will perform two intimate sets on 24th Street Theatre’s indoor stage. - Beware the Scare at Natural History Museum Los Angeles!
If you have a strange curiosity for mysterious, eerie, and grotesque monsters, keep on reading. Just in time for Halloween Natural History Museum has a new exhibition "Natural History of Horror"! Discover the science behind four classic horror films Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and Creature from the Black Lagoon at this new exhibit. Go behind-the-scenes and explore rare movie props, film footage, hands-on activities, and museum specimens. Along the way, you'll discover 17 objects from NHM’s collections, and four early Universal movie monsters. The exhibition also features an interactive “lab” where you can step into the boots of a scientist as you try your hand at reanimation of a frog. You can also see some key props that were donated to the museum‘s History Department, including metal shackles Dr. Frankenstein used to restrain the monster. The Natural History of Horror exhibition unwraps the origins of one of the most terrifying of screen legends: the Mummy. The wonderful things inside — strange animals, statues, and gold — sparked an international obsession with ancient Egypt. In the gallery, you will find Dracula in your midst, and immerse yourself in the vampire legends that were around for centuries before Bram Stoker published his mesmerizing novel of the same name in 1897. The exhibit is open from October 10, 2019 through April 19, 2020, and is free with paid museum admission. - Free Lunch For LA Kids All Summer Long At Los Angeles Public Libraries!
This summer, kids can enjoy delicious and free lunch at selected public libraries. The free lunch is for kids 2 through 18. The California Summer Meal Coalition, and California Library Association working together offer summer meals and programming designed to provide nourishment and help prevent summer learning loss for children and teens in low-income communities. They welcome all, and they provide access, free of charge, to resources that support the community’s lifelong needs. By serving free meals and offering complementary literacy programs during the summer, they are feeding children during the summer and engaging low-income families with local public libraries. Visit the following libraries Monday through Friday, from June 10th to August 9th, 2019 to taste the special summer menu. Lunch is served between 12:30 through 1:30 p.m., and is absolutely free. - Free Late Night Fridays At The Tar Pits Are Back!
It is that time of the year again to explore the Tar Pits after hours on Fridays throughout the Summer! Starting June 14th, Tar Pits will be open from 5-8 pm, on Fridays all summer long. Every Fridays during summer, La Tar Pits Museum is offering Free Museum Admission, and special activities for families. Explore the Tar Pits and the Park where you can witness the excavators working at the active sites Project 23 and Pit 91. Then explore the museum for free, see scientists and volunteers at work in the Fossil Lab, experience the Mammoths and Mastodons at La Brea Tar Pits exhibition, and see what it’s like to get stuck in the “tar” with the Tar Pull. Special Activities Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the Fossil Lab Step inside the Fossil Lab to learn how the scientists and volunteers work on fossils that are dug up right at the Tar Pits. $10 per person.
