- Giant glowing figures invade DTLA!
This October, four giant illuminated humanoid figures will invade Downtown Los Angeles and take over FIGat7th. These giants are quiet and gentle, yet curious about our fantastic planet and its inhabitants. They’ll live among us, observing the crowds at FIG while serving as the backdrop to countless selfies. Inspiration for this light installation has been taken from the 1973 Czech/ French film Fantastic Planet (La Planète Sauvage). This stop motion science fiction film directed by René Laloux depicted a story set in an unimaginably distant future in a world of gargantuan humanoids where human beings are a feral race. The giants are another edgy and ephemeral artwork by Australian artist Amanda Parer. Be sure to stop by with your kids between October 30, 2019 and November 10, 2019 between 11:00 am to 11:00 pm to say hello, touch, hug, and take selfie with these giants. FIGat7th is located at 735 S. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017.

- Latest News on Reopening of Schools!
Today, April 27, 2020, Austin Beutner, Superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District updated families regarding reopening of schools. It has been 25 school days since closure of schools and transition to distance learning. Beutner said, "Reopening of schools will be a gradual process with a schedule and school day that may be different. But before that can happen, health authorities have to solve some very real issues for the safe return of our school community." He added that 75,000+ employees serve the needs of almost 700,000 students who live with another couple of million people. And the following questions need to be answered before safe return to schools: Will testing be available for all employees, students and their families? Who will pay for testing? He continued, "A robust system of testing and contact tracing will need to be in place before any serious talk begins about reopening schools.... We closed school facilities on March 13 so our schools did not become a petri dish and cause the virus to spread in the communities we serve. That's worked. We do not want to reverse that in the hasty return to schools." LAUSD will remain in close coordination with state and local authorities for guidance on the issues. Meanwhile, LAUSD will continue to provide meals to students and their families through Garb and Go Centers. For more information about reopening of the schools and the latest news, visit LAUSD's official website.
- We Maybe A Few Weeks Away From Relaxing Stay At Home Orders, Newsom Says!
During his briefing today, governor Gavin Newsom addressed the stay at home orders, and the possible relaxing of the orders in a "few weeks". We are so close to changing the stay at home orders and have been making so much progress, he said as he urged citizens to continue to stay at home and practice social distancing. He added, "I hope it's in the next few weeks, I believe it will be, but that is based on our behaviors in the next few weeks so let's get there together and let's get there in a much stronger way than we otherwise could." "To slow down the spread of COVID-19 and keep bending the curve, we have to manage our behavior accordingly", he said, "that means not flocking to any open piece of coastline as soon as it gets hot outside." On April 14th, Newsom outlined six key goals to opening of the state: The ability to monitor and protect our communities through testing, contact tracing, isolation, and supporting those who are positive or who’ve been exposed. The ability to prevent infection in at-risk individuals. Can we identify outbreaks in nursing homes, prisons, and facilities for those with disabilities? And are we also able to care for older Californians and the medically vulnerable who are living in their own homes? The ability of the hospital and health systems to handle surges. Do we have the bed capacity, staff, PPE, and ventilators we’ll need? The ability to develop therapeutics to meet the demand. The ability for businesses, schools, and other facilities to support physical distancing. Do they have the guidelines and equipment they need? The ability to determine when to bring back Stay at Home measures. Can we track the right data to know when to do so, and can we communicate these orders effectively? Today, he added that the reopening would come in stages, and would depend on building infrastructure required to meet the six goals and holding the line on our stay at home orders. You can see his entire briefing today in the video below: For more videos like this, you can go to NBC News' Youtube Channel.
- Social Distancing Will Continue Through Summer!
White House coronavirus response coordinator Deborah Birx said Sunday, Social distancing must continue through the summer, even as some states began moving to ease shutdown and stay-at-home guidelines. She said that for the next several months, any gatherings or commercial activity would need to incorporate physical separation between people. Vice President Mike Pence spurred hopes for a revival of summertime activity when he predicted last week in a radio interview that the pandemic would be “behind us” by the Memorial Day weekend, less than a month from now. While President Trump has said he is leaving it up to governors how soon to allow businesses to reopen, he also signaled support earlier this month for protesters in a handful of states who demand a speedy end to restrictions. Per Los Angeles Times, most polls indicate that a majority of Americans want to proceed more cautiously to lift restrictions on activity. But governors whose states are easing restrictions said they felt confident in their decision-making. Despite the U.S. jobless rate hitting Depression-era levels last week, with unemployment claims topping 26 million, Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin said Sunday he expected a strong rebound by the U.S. economy over the summer. “I think as we begin to reopen the economy in May and June you’re going to see the economy really bounce back in July, August, September,” Mnuchin said on Fox.

- California Employees Are Eligible To Earn More For Working Less!
If your hours have been cut due to COVID-19, you may still get full aid relief through the CARES Act. California workers who see their hours cut as little as 10% due to the coronavirus outbreak are eligible to receive the entire $600-a-week federal subsidy offered in the $2-trillion federal rescue package, state officials and employment experts say. That means in some cases, workers in California — and across the country — could end up temporarily receiving far more from the government for those lost hours than they would have earned by working them. “If employers knew about this option for their workers, there’s a lot of free money floating around, and it’s shocking that so few people take it up,” said Till Von Wachter, a UCLA economics professor. “There are substantial financial gains and opportunities for workers in the current environment, and it’s just crazy that nobody’s taking it up.” While it was widely known that the flat $600-a-week federal unemployment supplement would be temporarily paid to workers who lost their jobs during the pandemic, it was less understood — including by some lawmakers — that the payment would also apply to any worker receiving prorated unemployment benefits because their hours had been reduced through a so-called work-sharing or short-time program. “As long as you are receiving at least $1 in unemployment insurance, you are eligible for the $600,” Employment Development Department spokesperson Aubrey Henry said.
