  • Schools Won't Open Until There is Testing and Tracing!

Today, August 17, 2020, LAUSD Superintendent Austin Beutner announced that health factors in the community still don't allow LAUSD to bring back the kids back to school. The level of new cases in Los Angeles are still 2 1/2 times the state guidelines, and while the portion of those testing positive is below state thresholds, it's still considerably higher than the World Health Organization standards and those in place for New York. School will start a bit differently this year, he said, including the schedule. "In Simple terms, Monday is a day for teachers to plan and prepare. On Tuesday afternoon, all school principals will hold a meeting for the families and on Wednesday afternoon, students will have a chance to meet their teachers. Thursday and Friday are regular school days, which will start at 9 am." He announced that in addition to appropriate health practices at schools, LAUSD will provide regular coronovirus testing for students and staff, as well as for family members of students and staff who test positive or show symptoms of the virus. Simply put, LAUSD can reduce the risk at schools by testing all at a school to isolate both symptomatic and asymptomatic carriers of the disease. Any return to schools will include an appropriate set of health practices when conditions in the community allow for students to be at schools. Students and staff will be provided with the appropriate personal protective equipment including masks. Facilities and school schedules are being reconfigured to help all at schools maintain a safe distance apart. Students will stay in small cohorts, where possible. And facilitates will be kept clean and sanitized. Classrooms are sanitized from top to bottom every day with electrostatic cleaners and MERV-13 filters (the equivalent of an N-95 mask) are being used in air conditioning systems. "But this is not enough", he said. A robust system of testing and contract tracing would be needed to make it possible to return to schools. LAUSD will begin testing for the virus when the new school year starts. They'll build this program in a measured fashion and will start by carefully fine tuning systems and operational logistics. Then tests will be provided to staff who are currently working at schools, as well as their children who are participating in the childcare provided for LAUSD staff. Tests will then be provided for all staff and students over a period of weeks to establish a baseline. On an ongoing basis, sample testing based on epidemiological models will be done for each cohort of staff and students. Testing will also be provided to family members of students and staff who test positive for the virus and family members who show symptoms. This will help get students back to school as soon as possible while protecting the health and safety of all in the school community. Any decision about the return of students to school is still some time away, he added. The launch of this effort now, however, will allow a program of testing and contact tracing to be built and made to operate seamlessly so it can provide a base of knowledge to help prepare for an eventual return to school campuses. Several leading organizations are helping in this effort. SummerBios will be providing the volume of tests in a timely manner at a cost which makes this program feasible. Clinical Reference Laboratory, one of the largest privately held testing labs in the U.S. will provide in-cheek swab test kits for the youngest learners. Microsoft is providing the tools and the technologies to manage the work flows and make sure the information is shared appropriately. Anthem Blue Cross will provide access to health-related date to better inform the testing and tracing program. Health Net will support a portion of the testing-related costs and will work to make sure every eligible family is enrolled in Medi-Cal or Covered California. They'll also provide support to route claims for students and staff with existing health coverage and explore sharing additional information about the health impact of the virus. UCLA, the Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University will be providing scientific expertise to optimize the use of testing resources, as well as support to coordinate the information and help make it available to the other researchers. For more information about Superintendent Austin Beutner's update on August 17, 2020 about schools reopening, please visit LAUSD's website.

  • What Does The New Reality Of Long Term School Closure Mean for Families?

LAUSD announced this morning that all LA Unified schools will stay closed throughout the end of the school year and summer. This decision to continue at-home learning for the remainder of the school year came after consultation with public health officials and the Governor, according to Nick Melvoin. What does this new reality mean for families? Devices/connectivity LAUSD officials are still working with partners like Verizon and Amazon to provide all students with the technology they need to learn from home. They will be providing headphones to all high school students to help minimize distractions. If your kids still need devices or hotspot, you can reach out to your school principal, or email BD4info@lausd.net to get what you need. Meals for Families The 63 Grab and Go food centers will continue to serve meals for students and families, every weekday from 8 am to 11am. Graduations and end of year celebrations While graduations and end of year events will have to be celebrated virtually for now, LAUSD officials are aware how meaningful these achievements are for students and families, and they are exploring the best ways to give high school graduates the opportunity they deserve to walk across a stage and receive their diploma as soon as it’s safe to do so. Mental health support The District has launched a Mental Health hotline to help students and families cope with the stress of this crisis. Nick Melvoin will also be hosting a virtual conversation, “Fostering Resilience & Well-being during COVID-19 Crisis,” with experts, District leaders, and parents on Facebook Live on April 15, 2020 at 4:30 pm. You can submit questions ahead of time through this form. Special Education Additional guidance will be coming to families and schools this week from LAUSD officials, and here are resources for families with students with disabilities. Additional Educational Resources To help students continue their education at home, numerous educational companies are offering free subscriptions during school closure.

  • 3 Good Reasons to Plan a Fishing Trip With Your Kids!

When we think about spending good times with our kids, the first thing that comes to mind is taking them to a theme park. Getting on a roller coaster, taking some selfies with cartoon characters, and treat our kids to an ice-cream. But have you ever thought about taking your kids for a fishing adventure? Most of you would say ‘no’, because people think that fishing is for loners, solitude lovers, and those who want to spend some pensive time far away from the hustle and bustle of life. They find fishing a not-so-fun activity, hence, eliminating it from the list of spending quality time with kids. But what if I give you 3 good reasons that makes fishing a perfect way to spend some quality time with your kids? Love for Nature Millennial kids hardly get time to have a face-off with nature. Between hectic school life and evening coaching classes, the free time kids get is occupied with digital gadgets. Our grounds have become abundant; parks are deprived of kids’ laughter because now children are busy in the cyber world. You might think that staying home saves your kids from developing bad habits, but it also takes them away from nature. So, taking your kids for fishing is the best way to develop love for nature, and introducing them to the majesty of nature. Developing Patience Most parents complain that their kids lack patience. But they don’t know that you can’t inculcate patience in them just by asking them. You have to train and teach them, and nothing is better than taking them on a fishing trip. Obviously, fishing demands a lot of patience as you don’t know when you would be able to catch the fish. In case you are going on a fishing trip with a fishing expert, your kids will see the whole process and learn the significance of patience and controlling emotions. A reward of Hard Work Besides teaching patience, fishing is also a good way to teach children how to cherish the reward of hard work. Just imagine how excited your kids will feel after catching a fish after waiting for a long time. Usually, kids don’t understand the significance of getting a reward after putting hard work. That’s why they don’t give their maximum in their academics. But fishing teaches them why it is essential to give your best in every task and not to give up till the end.

  • How to Plan the Perfect Cruise Vacation with Kids!

When you are planning on traveling with your kids, there are always some obstacles that you will have to overcome. It is important to remember that while a cruise vacation with your kids can be fun and exciting, you have to do the proper planning first. It will be essential for you to go through the proper steps of planning before you head out on a cruise with your whole family. Always do your research beforehand There are many different options when it comes to taking a cruise vacation with your kids. One of the most important things to look into is the size and options of the staterooms on board. While most staterooms are made for couples, you will need to book a stateroom that is going to be big enough for your entire family. Princess Cruises is a great example of a cruise line that will have staterooms large enough for both you and your kids. You should also look into what amenities are included with your cruise fare. Keep your eye out for a cruise that will include all food in the price of your fare. This will make it much easier to afford to feed your family on the cruise each day. Work with a travel agent Working with a travel agent is a great way for you to take the headache out of getting your cruise put together. When you tell your travel agent that you are planning a cruise vacation with your kids, they’ll be able to tell you which cruise lines are the best when it comes to taking your children with you. It is important that you choose a travel agent who is going to charge you a reasonable fee while also helping you save a great deal on your travel expenses. A really experienced travel agent will be able to help you save money at the end of the day by making your travel expenses affordable. Let your kids help in the planning It is important that you let your kids feel like they are part of the planning process. This will help them feel like they’re really part of the trip while also teaching them responsibility. Letting them choose which area of the cruise ship you stay on or even letting them help choose which destination you go to will give them a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction before, during, and after your trip. Look for cruise reviews and sites online There are going to be plenty of places online where you can find great reviews of the cruise that you are planning on going on. There are also online databases that will give you all the information that you would want to know about each cruise liner. If you want a more interactive look at the ship you might be vacationing on, YouTube is a great resource where you can see virtually countless videos of travelers who have been on cruises in the past. Be at the port city at least a day before your departure Getting to your port city at least a day before you depart will help you to have time to get settled and enjoy the local sites. This will also give you some room to budge in case there were any flight delays or early departures on your cruise. Finding lodging near a port may be difficult to do. This is why it is important to book your hotel far in advance before you leave to the port city. Take your medication with you It can be devastating when you leave your medication at home while on a trip. However, when traveling with kids, this can be even more dangerous. It is very important that you bring all of the medication that you will need in order to have a safe and happy cruise. You might also need to pack motion sickness meds. These motion sickness meds will help anyone who is feeling like they are not enjoying the constant motion during heavy weather on the high seas. Let your kids know that there are rules while on a cruise There is almost nothing more annoying on a vacation than having an unruly kid that doesn't know when to calm down. It is very important that you teach your children about the rules on a cruise ship. Younger children will have to learn about the type of behavior that they should be on while in public on the cruise. Setting rules for your stateroom can also help you keep your limited space clean. With your older children, it is important to set boundaries when it comes to their freedom. They should have some freedom to enjoy the ship on their own, but it is also important that they still be accountable to you. Remember to pack all of your family essentials Every family has certain essential that they just need. Your children may have security blankets or stuffed animals that they just can't live without. There may also be some favorite handheld video games or devices that your kids would just love to have onboard. Make sure you remember all of the essentials by making a checklist to refer to when packing. See if there are daycare options on the cruise ship Daycare options are usually available on most cruise ships. These options can be great for when parents just need some time alone. It is a good idea to check the first day you are onboard to see what type of babysitting or daycare options there are. Many cruises will have this included in the price of your fare. It will be important to make sure that you are aware of any rules or procedures that go with placing your children in the care of these onboard caregivers. Make sure to check out the kids club While your kids may seem too young or too old to use the kids club, you may be surprised. There are plenty of options that may really excite your kids. There are usually so many activities on a cruise for adults that families can forget to check in and see what the options are for children. This is why it is important to not put off checking out the kids club. Make sure you always have a way of reaching your kids On a cruise ship, it can be difficult to get cell service or even wi-fi. It can be a good idea to invest in some walkie-talkies in order to reach your kids if you ever get separated. You can also set up a meeting point on the ship or see if you can give them a key to your stateroom in case they get lost. A family vacation on a cruise ship can be a very fun thing to do with your kids. While you may feel like taking your kids on vacation might just be too much to handle, hopefully these tips will help you feel more confident about your cruise experience. Cruise lines have learned that more and more families are looking to take their kids with them on the high seas. Due to this increase in demand, there are more options now than ever for having a successful and fun trip with your children.
