Parental Controls and Child Safety on Netflix!

Netflix, a streaming platform with an extensive content library, caters to viewers of all ages. However, safeguarding the streaming environment for children is crucial. Parents can establish a safe and family-friendly setting on Netflix by setting up parental controls. This enables them to control the content their children can access. You need to learn more about parental controls and child safety on the streaming platform, and you can help.

Understanding Parental Controls on Netflix

Netflix has created a dedicated Kids' profile to ensure a secure and age-appropriate viewing experience for children. This profile offers carefully selected content and extra parental control features. It automatically filters out mature content and presents only shows and movies suitable for kids. Parents can personalize their Kids' profiles even more by adjusting content filtering and access restrictions in the "Profile & Parental Controls" section.

Empowering Parents: Setting Up Effective Controls

To set up digital parenting controls on Netflix, follow these step-by-step instructions:

  1. Log in to your Netflix account using a web browser.

  2. Click on the profile icon in the top-right corner and select "Manage Profiles."

  3. If you don't have a separate profile for your child, click on "Add Profile" and enter their name. Check the box next to "Kid?" and click "Continue."

  4. Select the newly created profile and scroll down to "Maturity Settings." Click on "Edit."

  5. Enter your account password to proceed.

  6. On the "Viewing Restrictions" page, choose the content age rating suitable for your child, such as TV-Y (6 and under), TV-Y7 (7 and younger), or TV-G (general audience).

  7. Click on "Save" to apply the changes.

Remember, it's important to create individual user profiles for each family member, including children. Only in this case, it will be possible to set content restrictions based on content ratings.

Did you know that you have a viewing history on Netflix? Viewing activity monitoring can be useful when it comes to a child profile to check age-appropriate content. On the other hand, family-friendly content and content for personal use are not always desirable for anyone to see. In this case, you can sign in to Netflix and delete your browsing history. Additionally, you should think about Internet protection. For everyone with digital citizenship, online security should be a top priority. VPN remains the main pillar of safe streaming habits and online privacy.

Navigating Content Ratings and Guidelines

To maintain appropriate content for your child on Netflix, the Netflix Kids experience is the ideal option. This profile offers curated titles suitable for children aged 12 and under, all with a maximum rating of PG. However, you can manually adjust the maturity ratings for each profile.

Access your Netflix account page on a web browser and navigate to the Profile & Parental Controls section. Select your child's profile and click on "change" beneath Viewing Restrictions. You will be prompted to enter your Netflix account password, after which you can edit the maturity ratings.

You have the option to choose a rating level up to NC-17. Remember to click "Save". Keep in mind that selecting content above PG (including PG-13 and TV-14) will remove the kids' profile badge for that user. On the bright side, you can designate it as a kid's profile and lower the maturity rating. Additionally, these settings also apply to Netflix's games.

If you encounter any issues while trying to convert a kid's profile into one with a higher maturity rating, it may be necessary to delete the profile and create a new one.

Addressing Challenges and Acknowledging Limitations

Setting up a kid's profile on Netflix is believed to prevent young children from accessing mature content. However, Netflix's current system allows children to switch profiles easily. This means that the so-called "soft controls" provided by Netflix do not lock kids into their designated profiles.

In reality, if a child has already figured out how to switch profiles, they can freely move from their profile to the parent's profile without any restrictions (aside from their awareness and conscience). Relying on the innocence and honesty of a child as a form of "parental security" is not a reliable security measure at all.

So, what can you do when your children switch profiles and access content that you don't want them to watch? Unfortunately, at the moment, there is no way to keep them out of your profile. The only option available is to set a PIN to prevent them from watching specific content, such as a recently added Rated R movie. However, even this solution has its problems, as the PIN system is counterintuitive and doesn't block everything.

Beyond Netflix: Fostering Holistic Digital Safety

Media consumption has become so large that profile customization and content filtering cannot limit everything. The best approach is open communication and responsible internet usage. With a child, it is worth engaging and teaching how to use digital resources. This also means that parents should not abuse online monitoring activities.

It would make more sense for children to use the Internet 70% for educational content and only 30% for entertainment. Online education is here to stay, and it is better to teach your child how to use the Internet correctly and to give entertainment guidelines than to rely on restrictions. Anyway, in the digital landscape, the child will soon learn to bypass any prohibitions. To bypass restrictions, it is enough to open a browser. By the way, it is also important to set up a VPN so that neither the child nor you become victims of hackers.

Conclusion

To optimize the safety and family-friendly streaming experience on Netflix, apart from configuring parental controls, consider the following tips:

  • Continuously review and adjust the parental controls as your children develop and their viewing preferences evolve.

  • Encourage open communication with your children regarding suitable content choices and actively engage in discussions about the shows and movies they watch.

  • Explore Netflix's dedicated section for family-friendly content, offering a broad range of shows and movies suitable for audiences of all ages.
