The 2020 Chinese New Year event will be divided into three parts: a variety show, a "Jing-Jin-Ji" photo exhibition and a cultural heritage crafts display and demonstration. The variety show will feature performance groups from Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei with Chinese acrobatics, martial arts, folk dance, traditional music, Peking opera and more.


The cultural heritage crafts display and demonstration will include Chinese culture painting and folk arts. During the VIP reception, you can engage in a ceremonial tea service and paper cutting demonstration, while enjoying folk music and elaborate Peking Opera costumes.

The Skirball Cultural Center is hosting the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Concert this Saturday. The Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles will perform an array of uplifting numbers, including “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” “From Sea to Shining Sea,” and “I Have a Dream”—an orchestral and choral setting of Dr. King’s 1963 speech delivered during the March on Washington. The program will also feature the winners of the SCLC Annual Oratorical and Essay Contest.

In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., kids will learn to create and share their own digital art inspired by MLK’s “I have a dream” speech. They’ll explore the basics of Fresh Paint and Photos, using life like oil and watercolors, pastels, and more to craft their own creations.

At the end of the workshop, participants will have the chance to use their new skills to create artwork that expresses what “I have a dream” means to them. (Free)

Marking its 11th year, the highly anticipated annual Lunar New Year celebration returns to kick-off the Year of the Metal Rat, hosted by The Americana at Brand on Sunday, January 19, 2020. The festivities will feature an opening parade highlighting the classic Dragon Dance, as well as the Lion Dance, traditional Korean and Chinese dances and a dazzling magic show. Additional activities include calligraphy, sugar painting, dough figurine making and more.
