The fee-free days provide a great opportunity to visit a new place or an old favorite, especially one of the national parks that normally charge an entrance fee. Scandinavian Festival filled with music, dancing, food, lectures, demonstration, vendors and activities for young and old alike. The Viking Encampment and Sami Village will once again be present.

Family Activities include: Head wreaths: Make a head wreath with real flowers and ribbon; Maypole: Raise the Maypole and dance around it while singing traditional songs; Kubb: Learn the ancient game of the Vikings. It’s a bit like horseshoes, but without horseshoes or the stake; Croquet: Try your hand at hitting the balls through our Dala Horse hoops.

Music, singing and dancing will change hourly. On Saturday at 10:30 the Festival will open with a colorful parade of flags, along with dignitaries from the Scandinavian countries. Many will be in Old World costumes. In the food court, you will find a variety of Scandinavian foods such as Swedish Meatballs, Aebleskivers, Swedish Pancakes, Lefse, Danish Pastries, and more. Join the Aquarium for a weekend of family fun celebrating Earth Day while learning simple, everyday tips to protect our environment. Join the STEM Festival for children of all ages at Santa Monica College. The festival will feature hands-on experiments, live demos, and interactive workshops for children of all ages.

Live demos and experiments will include learning about iron composition in iron-fortified cereals—and extracting iron using strong, rare earth magnets; extracting genomic DNA from strawberries; performing chromatography to separate the colored pigments in a permanent parker; learning principles of gravity and physics by launching water-soaked foam balls using a gigantic slingshot; and much more.

You will meet in the college cafeteria at 10 a.m. Parking on any college lot is free on the day of the STEM Festival. [Free]
