Stand and Deliver

The Phantom Projects Theatre at La Habra Depot presents Stand and Deliver, a stage adaptation of the Oscar-nominated film, from May 14 through May 30, 2027. Adapted by Robert Bella from the screenplay by Ramón Menéndez and Tom Musca, the play tells the real-life story of Jaime Escalante, the East Los Angeles teacher who believed his students could do the impossible.

After leaving an engineering career to teach high school math, Escalante lands at an underfunded school struggling with gangs, dropouts and the threat of losing its accreditation. With quick wit, unconventional lessons and relentless faith in his students, he sets an audacious goal: passing the Advanced Placement Calculus exam. When testing officials question the results, the class has to prove what they've achieved all over again.

This uplifting drama is a terrific choice for families with tweens and teens, especially students heading into tough classes or anyone who needs a reminder that hard work and a great teacher can change everything. It's a proudly Southern California story, and it opens the door to meaningful conversations about education, perseverance and community.

The show runs about 1 hour and 45 minutes plus a 15-minute intermission. Performances are scheduled on Friday evenings and weekend afternoons and evenings.
