Description
Bob Baker Marionette Theater is bringing its puppets outdoors for one more free Sunday morning on the west lawn of Hollyhock House in Barnsdall Art Park. Presented with the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, this final date in the Puppets in the Park series features a 30-minute Hallowe'en Spooktacular show filled with friendly, seasonal marionette magic.
There are two chances to catch the show, at 9:30 AM and 11:00 AM, and each performance is followed by an hour of hands-on family art activities. Kids can sing along with the puppets, then roll up their sleeves to make something creative of their own. It is a lovely, low-key way to introduce young children to live puppetry, which is the Bob Baker company's specialty.
The setting adds a bit of history, too. Hollyhock House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, was commissioned by Aline Barnsdall, a producer of children's theater who later gave Barnsdall Art Park to the city. Watching a puppet show on her lawn feels like a fitting tribute.
No RSVP is needed. Bring a blanket and arrive early, because lawn space is limited and the gates open at 9:00 AM. Everything happens outdoors, the inside of the house is closed during the event, and pets are not allowed.
