Modern Mosaics: Family Workshop

Ancient art meets Los Angeles wildlife at Modern Mosaics, a free, hands-on family workshop at the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades. On select Saturdays through January, kids and grown-ups can drop in, sit down together and design a mosaic starring an animal that calls LA home, from a backyard hummingbird to a prowling coyote.

The idea comes straight from the galleries. Many of the Roman mosaics on view at the Villa feature animals, some sweet and some surprisingly fierce, and the workshop invites families to borrow those age-old methods while working with contemporary materials. Artists Graham Moore and Jim Wojtowicz of Collage Garage helped shape the program, and every supply is provided.

The workshop is presented in both English and Spanish, which makes it a welcoming pick for bilingual families. Since it is a drop-in program, your family can stop by anytime during the afternoon window, then wander the gardens and galleries before or after creating. Families are encouraged to bring a blanket and a picnic, though folding chairs, glass, metal cutlery and alcohol are not allowed on the grounds.

Plan ahead before heading out. While the workshop itself needs no ticket, the Getty Villa requires a free timed-entry reservation for every visit, and parking is paid. Strollers are welcome within the museum's size limits, and complimentary strollers are available while supplies last.

This family art-making program is best suited to preschoolers, school-age kids and tweens working alongside a grown-up.

This event is free, and the workshop itself does not require a ticket.

A free timed-entry reservation is required to enter the Getty Villa.

🍔 Food

Families are welcome to bring a picnic and a blanket or towel to sit on. Glass, metal cutlery and alcohol are not permitted.

The Getty Villa also offers on-site dining with Mediterranean-inspired fare.

🚙 Parking

Parking at the Getty Villa is $25 per car or motorcycle, or $15 after 3:00 PM. Payment is cashless.

There is no street parking; visitors must park on-site. Parking is free for U.S. military service members and veterans with valid ID.
