Hanukkah at Pretend City

Hanukkah also called the Festival of Lights, is an eight-night Jewish holiday that celebrates religious freedom and miracles in Jewish history. Hanukkah traditions include lighting the menorah, exchanging gifts, spinning dreidels, and eating special foods such as latkes (potato pancakes). At Pretend City’s celebration, you’ll find fun ways to teach your child about this unique holiday!

Art (all day):

• Put together your own Star of David using thin popsicle sticks, glue, and paint!
• Celebrate the miracle of oil in a new way: using blue water color and oil to make unique patterns on paper!
• Explore dreidels and rice in our sensory bin!

Purpose of the Play: Through these activities, children will experience different cultures and holidays, learn about cause and effect, develop social-emotional skills, develop neurological pathways through sensory play, and discover how water and oil do not mix.

Story Time (11 AM & 2:30 PM):

• In the book Runaway Dreidel by Leslea Newman, a dreidel that takes off through a boy’s living room brings readers on a runaway adventure where modern times and history blend together in magical ways to celebrate Chanukah.

Music & Movement:

• Spend time with us practicing using a dreidel and trying to get it to spin!

Purpose of the Play: Fine motor development, concentration and focus, social/emotional development.
