Description

Gloria Molina Grand Park turns into a glowing space of remembrance and celebration for Downtown Día de los Muertos, a free outdoor cultural exhibition that runs for 10 days in the heart of the Civic Center. Artists and community organizations from across Los Angeles build large, detailed ofrendas throughout the park, each one honoring loved ones and telling a story about the many cultures that make up the city. Families can stroll through the altars any day of the run and take in the marigolds, candles, photos and handmade decorations up close.

A community altar invites visitors to join in, too. Guests may bring a framed photo, a small keepsake or a written message to leave in memory of someone special, which can be a gentle, meaningful way to talk with kids about family history and the people who came before them.

The run opens with a festive Saturday celebration filled with live music, a traditional processional and blessing, and kid-friendly activities like face painting and sugar skull workshops, and it pairs nicely with exploring the museums and arts spaces along Grand Avenue. The following weekend, Noche de los Muertos closes things out on Sunday afternoon into the evening with headline performances, hands-on crafts such as sugar skull decorating, ribbon braiding and paper weaving, and the park lit by candlelight as night falls.

Everything is free and open to all ages, and strollers and leashed pets are welcome. Since the park sits right next to a Metro station, taking the train is an easy way for your family to skip the parking hunt.
