Description
LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes is hosting its free Día de los Muertos Family Day in downtown Los Angeles, a lively afternoon that celebrates the tradition of honoring loved ones with music, dance and hands-on art. This year's program spotlights the culture of Oaxaca, with folklórico groups and traditional dancers performing regional dances throughout the afternoon.
Kids will love the bilingual art workshops. They can paint a colorful papier-mâché calavera mask, craft a flower crown or boutonniere, and assemble a fragrant herb bundle while learning how scent and memory help families remember the people they love. Children who visit each workshop collect stamps in a guide and can turn in a completed guide for a special giveaway.
A community ofrenda invites families to honor their own loved ones, and a DJ keeps the energy up between performances. Food vendors will sell tamales, elotes and more, so your family can make a whole afternoon of it. RSVPs are recommended, but entry depends on capacity, and walk-ins are welcome while space allows.
