Costume Day

AHEAD With Horses, the Shadow Hills nonprofit that uses therapeutic vaulting to help children and adults with developmental differences, is opening its gates for its annual Costume Day on Halloween. It is a charming, easygoing way to spend part of October 31 with some very patient four-legged friends.

The stars of the day are the horses themselves, who show up in costume alongside the staff and volunteers who care for them. Families can stroll over, admire the creative getups, and get a closer look at the animals that power the program's lessons all year long. Kids who are already in costume for trick-or-treating will fit right in.

Costume Day is also a nice chance for parents to learn about a local organization doing meaningful work for kids with special needs. The event runs for a three-hour window around midday, so it pairs easily with evening Halloween plans. Since this is a working equestrian center, plan on closed-toe shoes and remind little ones to follow staff directions around the horses.
