Description
Little artists don't need a trip to Mid-Wilshire to get inspired by LACMA's collection. Through Communities Create LA!, the museum's community programs team sets up free drop-in art workshops at neighborhood spots in South Los Angeles, and each session spins a fun project out of a real artwork from the museum. This fall, most workshops happen at Lennox Library, with a few stops at A C Bilbrew Library and Earvin "Magic" Johnson Park.
Every date brings a brand-new project, so families can come once or make it a regular after-school habit. Kids can shape clay sea creatures inspired by Dora De Larios's Ocean, paint a cozy autumn watercolor in golds and crimsons after George Inness, build a paper sculpture that spins and sways like an Alexander Calder mobile, and design a mini treasure chest that draws on Spanish and Indigenous motifs. Later sessions include a clay calavera for Día de los Muertos, tissue-paper flowers, yarn painting, Matisse-inspired paper-and-clay collages, and a pretend clay feast of tiny cheeses and sweets.
The workshops are relaxed, low-pressure, and perfect for curious kids who love getting their hands messy. Parents get an easy, budget-friendly outing, and children walk away with a finished piece of art plus a little story about the masterpiece behind it. Since it's drop-in, there's no need to commit to a whole series.
Keep in mind that children under 12 must have an adult with them. Times and locations change from date to date, so check the schedule below before heading out with your family.
