826LA@Hammer: Monsters Hate Rules: A Game-Writing Workshop

The Hammer Museum and 826LA team up for a free creative writing workshop with a monstrously fun twist. In Monsters Hate Rules, young writers learn that a pack of bored monsters is desperate for new games, and it is up to the kids to invent them, write the rules and make sure no monster can sneak in a cheat.

Participants will roll dice, flip cards, race the buzzer and even act like monsters as they test their creations. Along the way, they practice clear, creative writing in a way that feels more like game night than homework. The session is led by Kim Adelman, a nonfiction author and self-described certified monster tamer.

These collaborative workshops are designed for students ages 8 to 14 and take place in the museum's Bay Nimoy Studio. Spots are limited, so reservations are encouraged, and the free Hammer Museum galleries make an easy add-on after the workshop.
