  • A Complete Guide to Hosting a Kid-Friendly Thanksgiving at Home!

Thanksgiving is a time for family, gratitude, and creating lasting memories. But let's face it, when you've got little ones running around, hosting the perfect Thanksgiving can feel like wrangling a flock of wild turkeys! Fear not, fellow parents! This comprehensive guide will help you transform your Thanksgiving celebration into a kid-friendly extravaganza that'll have everyone, from toddlers to grandparents, gobbling with joy. Setting the Stage for a Kid-Friendly Thanksgiving Creating a welcoming atmosphere The key to a successful kid-friendly Thanksgiving starts with setting the right tone. Think warm, inviting, and just a touch of whimsy. As soon as your guests walk through the door, they should feel like they've entered a cozy autumn wonderland ready for relaxation and play. Consider using soft, warm lighting to create a comforting ambiance. String lights or battery-operated candles can add a magical touch without posing a safety hazard for curious little hands. And don't forget the power of scent! A subtle pumpkin spice or apple cinnamon aroma can instantly evoke those cozy fall feelings. Kid-friendly decorations Now, let's talk decorations. While elegant centerpieces and fine china have their place, a kid-friendly Thanksgiving calls for a bit more creativity. Here are some ideas to get you started: Create a "Thankful Tree": Set up a small tree (real or artificial) and provide colorful paper leaves for kids to write what they're thankful for. This not only serves as a beautiful decoration but also encourages gratitude. Craft a Turkey-Shaped Bulletin Board: Use this to display children's artwork or Thanksgiving-themed coloring pages. Set Up a Pumpkin Decorating Station: Provide small pumpkins, stickers, and washable markers for kids to create their own masterpieces. Hang a Festive Banner: Let the kids help create a "Happy Thanksgiving" banner using construction paper and string. Remember, the goal is to create an environment that feels special while still being approachable and fun for children. Safety considerations While we're focused on fun, safety should always be a top priority. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Secure any potentially dangerous decorations out of reach of small children. Opt for battery-operated candles instead of real flames. Ensure that any small decorative items (such as acorns or mini pumpkins) are too large to pose a choking hazard. Create a designated "kid zone" away from the kitchen to keep little ones safe while meal preparation is underway. Related: 15 Fun Thanksgiving Crafts to Make with Your Kids! Planning the Menu Traditional dishes with a kid-friendly twist Who says Thanksgiving dinner can't be fun and kid-friendly? With a few creative twists, you can transform traditional dishes into meals that will appeal to even the pickiest eaters. Here are some ideas: Turkey Sliders: Serve mini turkey sandwiches on soft rolls for easier handling. Mashed Potato "Cupcakes" : Use a muffin tin to create individual servings of mashed potatoes, topped with a small pat of butter or a sprinkle of cheese. Sweet Potato "Fries": Cut sweet potatoes into strips, season, and bake for a healthier alternative to the traditional casserole. Cranberry Juice "Mocktails": Serve cranberry juice with a splash of sprite in fancy plastic cups for a kid-friendly beverage. Involving kids in menu planning One of the best ways to ensure kids will eat the Thanksgiving meal is to involve them in the planning process. Hold a family meeting and ask for their input. You might be surprised by their creative ideas! Plus, this allows you to introduce new foods in a non-threatening way. Accommodating dietary restrictions In today's world, it's not uncommon to have guests with various dietary needs. Whether it's gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegetarian, it's essential to have options available. Consider making a few dishes that can easily be adapted to different needs, such as: Roasted vegetable medley (can be made vegan) Gluten-free stuffing (using gluten-free bread) Dairy-free pumpkin pie (using coconut milk) Remember, the goal is to make everyone feel included in the celebration! Pre-Dinner Activities for Kids Craft Activities Keep those little hands busy (and out of the kitchen) with some fun Thanksgiving-themed crafts: Thanksgiving-themed coloring pages: Print out a variety of Thanksgiving coloring pages featuring turkeys, pilgrims, and autumn scenes. Set up a coloring station with crayons, colored pencils, and markers. This simple activity can keep kids entertained for quite a while! DIY turkey hand art: This classic craft never gets old! Have kids trace their hands on colored paper, then help them cut out and decorate their hand turkeys. These can double as cute placemats or wall decorations. Outdoor activities If the weather permits, getting the kids outside can be a great way to burn off some energy before the big meal: Turkey-themed scavenger hunt: Create a list of Thanksgiving-related items for kids to find in the backyard. Think pinecones, specific colored leaves, acorns, etc. The first one to find all items gets a special Thanksgiving prize! Leaf pile jumping: If you have a yard full of fallen leaves, put them to good use! Rake them into a big pile and let the kids jump in. It's simple but so much fun (and it might even tire them out a bit before dinner). Indoor games For those chilly Thanksgiving days when outdoor play isn't an option: Thanksgiving bingo: Create bingo cards with Thanksgiving-themed images instead of numbers. Use candy corn as markers for an extra sweet touch! Pin the feather on the turkey: A Thanksgiving twist on the classic party game. Create a large turkey poster missing its tail feathers, and have kids try to pin the feathers on while blindfolded. Related: Best Places for Thanksgiving Take-Out Dinner in Los Angeles! This could be a lower table or a cleared countertop space. Provide child-sized cooking tools, aprons, and chef hats to make them feel like real little chefs. Safety tips for kids in the kitchen While cooking with kids can be fun, safety should always come first: Always supervise children in the kitchen Teach proper hand washing techniques Keep sharp objects and hot surfaces out of reach Explain kitchen safety rules before starting Setting Up a Kid-Friendly Thanksgiving Table Fun and practical table settings Transform your dining table into a kid-friendly wonderland: Use a kraft paper tablecloth that kids can draw on Provide crayons or markers at each place setting Use shatterproof plates and cups to prevent accidents Interactive placemats Create or purchase placemats with Thanksgiving-themed games or activities. Read them aloud during dessert. Gratitude tree Create a large tree on a poster board or wall. Provide leaf-shaped sticky notes for family members to write their gratitudes on and stick to the tree. Thanksgiving trivia for all ages Prepare a list of Thanksgiving-related trivia questions suitable for various age groups. This can be a fun way to learn more about the holiday while keeping everyone engaged. Some great options include: "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" "Free Birds" "Fantastic Mr. Fox" Group storytelling Start a story with one sentence, then go around the room having each person add a sentence. Quiet time activities For those who need some downtime after all the excitement: Provide Thanksgiving-themed coloring books and crayons Set up a quiet reading corner with Thanksgiving-themed books Have a designated area for puzzle-solving or Lego building Managing Expectations and Stress Tips for parents to stay calm Take deep breaths and remember it's about making memories, not perfection Delegate tasks to other family members Take short breaks when needed, even if it's just a few minutes of quiet in another room Handling unexpected situations Have a backup plan for common issues (like spills or tantrums) Keep a sense of humor about mishaps Remember that imperfect moments often become the most cherished memories Creating a support system Ask for help from other family members or friends Assign specific tasks to different people Create a tag-team system for supervising kids Cleaning Up and Winding Down Involving kids in age-appropriate clean-up tasks Make clean-up a game: Set a timer and see how much can be cleaned in 5 minutes Play "I Spy" with items that need to be put away Have a "clean-up dance party" with upbeat music Transitioning to bedtime routines Start winding down activities about an hour before bedtime Have a special Thanksgiving bedtime story ready Create a calm environment with dimmed lights and soft music Preserving memories of the day Take lots of photos throughout the day Have kids draw pictures of their favorite Thanksgiving moments Start a Thanksgiving journal to record memories year after year Takeaway Hosting a kid-friendly Thanksgiving doesn't have to be a recipe for stress. With a little planning, creativity, and flexibility, you can create a celebration that's enjoyable for all ages. Remember, the most important ingredient in any family gathering is love. So even if the turkey is a little dry or the kids are a bit rowdy, focus on the joy of being together and creating lasting memories. FUN WITH KID IN LA®: Your Ultimate Destination for Family Fun! • 11 DIY Halloween Costumes for Kids Using Household Items!

Halloween is a magical time for kids, filled with excitement, creativity, and a chance to transform into their favorite characters. But creating the perfect costume doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money or time shopping. With a bit of imagination and some everyday household items, you can craft amazing DIY Halloween costumes that are fun, unique, and budget-friendly. Here are some simple yet creative costume ideas you can make using things you probably already have at home. 1. The Classic Ghost Materials Needed : An old white sheet, scissors, a black marker, and safety pins or fabric glue (optional). Instructions: Prepare the Sheet : Find an old white sheet that you don't mind cutting. Lay it flat on the ground and have your child stand in the middle. Mark the Eye Holes : Gently drape the sheet over your child, making sure it's centered. Use the black marker to mark where their eyes are. Cut Out the Eye Holes : Carefully remove the sheet and cut out the eye holes where you marked. Make sure they’re large enough for good visibility. Secure the Costume : If the sheet is too loose, you can use safety pins or fabric glue to adjust the fit around the shoulders or waist, ensuring your child can move freely without tripping. Advertisement 2. Superhero Cape Materials Needed : An old t-shirt or pillowcase, scissors, fabric paint or markers, Velcro or safety pins. Instructions: Create the Cape : Cut the t-shirt from the neck down the sides, removing the front and keeping the back as the cape. If using a pillowcase, cut along one seam to open it up. Design the Cape : Use fabric paint or markers to decorate the cape with your child’s favorite superhero symbol, their initial, or let them create their own design. You can also explore t-shirt printing to create matching superhero outfits or personalized designs. Attach Fasteners : Sew or glue Velcro strips to the top corners of the cape, or use safety pins to attach it around the neck (under supervision to ensure safety). 3. Mummy Wrap Materials Needed : Toilet paper, white gauze, or strips of white fabric, tape or safety pins. Instructions: Prepare the Wraps : Tear long strips of toilet paper or fabric. If using gauze, ensure you have enough to cover your child’s body. Start Wrapping : Begin at the feet and work your way up, wrapping the strips loosely around your child. Make sure to leave gaps for eyes, nose, and mouth. Secure the Ends : Use small pieces of tape or safety pins to secure the ends of the wraps at various points, making sure they’re not too tight or uncomfortable. Final Touches : Tuck in any loose ends, and add more wraps around the arms and legs for a complete look. Optionally, use a bit of makeup to add some spooky details like dark circles around the eyes. Robot Costume Materials Needed : Cardboard boxes (one for the body and one smaller for the head), aluminum foil, duct tape, old buttons or bottle caps, and markers. Instructions: Prepare the Boxes : Cut a hole at the top of the larger box for your child’s head and two holes on the sides for the arms. For the smaller box, cut out holes for the eyes. Wrap in Foil : Cover both boxes in aluminum foil, securing it with duct tape on the inside or edges. Add Robot Details : Use markers, buttons, and bottle caps to create a control panel on the front of the larger box. Attach these items with glue or tape. Assemble the Costume : Have your child wear the larger box as the body and place the smaller box on their head. Secure the headpiece with tape or a chin strap if necessary. 5. Flower Pot Materials Needed : A large plastic bucket or pot (cut to size), fake flowers, green paper or fabric, glue, and a green shirt or leggings. Instructions: Cut the Pot : Cut out the bottom of the bucket or pot so your child can step into it. It should fit snugly around their waist. Decorate with Flowers : Glue fake flowers around the top rim of the pot. You can use a variety of flowers for a colorful effect. Create Leaves : Cut leaf shapes out of green paper or fabric and glue them around the pot or attach them to your child’s shirt or leggings. Complete the Look : Dress your child in a green shirt or leggings, then have them step into the flower pot. Secure the pot with a belt or suspenders if needed. 6. Animal Ears and Tail Materials Needed : Headband, construction paper or felt, old socks, stuffing (cotton or fabric scraps), hot glue gun, and safety pins. Instructions: Make the Ears : Cut ear shapes from construction paper or felt. For sturdier ears, use cardboard as a backing. Glue the ears to the headband. Create the Tail : Stuff an old sock with cotton or fabric scraps to create a tail. Sew or glue the end shut. Attach the Tail : Use safety pins to attach the tail to the back of your child’s pants. Make sure it’s secure but easy to remove. Dress Up : Have your child wear clothes that match the animal’s color, and they’re ready to go! 7. Magician Materials Needed : Black pants, white shirt, black fabric for a cape, paper towel roll, black paint, and a stick or rolled paper for a wand. Instructions : Prepare the Cape : Cut the black fabric to the desired length for a cape. Attach it to the shoulders of the shirt with safety pins or Velcro strips. Make the Hat : Paint the paper towel roll black and attach it to a circular piece of cardboard for the brim. Glue or tape it securely. Craft the Wand : Use a stick or roll up a piece of paper and paint it black. Add a white tip with paint or tape for an authentic look. Complete the Outfit : Dress your child in black pants and a white shirt, then add the cape, hat, and wand. Add a toy rabbit or a deck of cards for extra magician flair. 8. Rain Cloud Materials Needed : Grey or white hoodie, cotton balls, safety pins or glue, blue ribbons or paper strips. Instructions : Create the Cloud : Glue or pin cotton balls all over the hood and shoulders of the grey or white hoodie to form the cloud. Add Rain Drops : Cut blue ribbons or paper strips to different lengths to represent rain. Attach these to the bottom of the hoodie or around the waist. Finish the Costume : Dress your child in matching grey or white pants to complete the rain cloud look. O ptionally, add Melissa baby rain boots and an umbrella for a fun effect. 9. Pizza Slice Materials Needed : Large cardboard, yellow and red paint, construction paper (for toppings), string or elastic. Instructions: Cut the Slice : Cut a large triangle from the cardboard for the pizza slice shape. Paint the Base : Paint the entire triangle yellow, then add a red border around the top edge to represent sauce. Add Toppings : Cut out shapes from construction paper to resemble pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers, and other toppings. Glue them onto the pizza slice. Wear the Pizza Slice : Attach string or elastic to the top corners of the cardboard slice to create straps that go over your child’s shoulders. 10. Laundry Basket Costume Materials Needed : Plastic laundry basket, old clothes, clothespins, ribbon or belt. Instructions: Cut the Basket : Cut out the bottom of the laundry basket to fit around your child’s waist. Fill the Basket : Stuff the basket with old clothes or fabric to make it look like a pile of laundry. Use clothespins to attach some items around the edges for a fuller look. Secure the Basket : Use a ribbon or belt to secure the basket around your child’s waist, ensuring it’s comfortable and balanced. 11. Bubble Bath Costume Materials Needed : White balloons, safety pins, shower cap, loofah. Instructions: Prepare the Balloons : Inflate white balloons to different sizes to represent bubbles. Attach Balloons : Pin or tape the balloons to a white shirt and pants, covering as much area as you can without restricting movement. Add the Shower Cap : Have your child wear a shower cap to complete the bubble bath look. They can carry a loofah for added fun. Related: Discover LA’s Best Halloween Treats: 34 Sweet Spots! • Why Traveling Tarts in Encino is the Sweetest Baking Experience in LA!

There are afternoons that feel like you’ve stepped into a Pinterest board — you know, the kind where everything is gorgeously decorated, smells like butter and cinnamon, and feels straight out of a feel-good family movie. Our Halloween-themed baking class at Traveling Tarts in Encino? It was exactly  that. Let me take you inside the most magical three hours of baking, bonding, and belly laughs… plus the best chocolate pecan pie we’ve ever tasted! Welcome to Baking Paradise First Impressions: Red Carpet Ready! The moment we pulled up to Kara’s stunning home in Encino, we knew we were in for something special. We were greeted by — wait for it — a red carpet ! Yes, a literal red carpet rolled out for each guest. My husband, my 14-year-old son, and I couldn’t help but laugh and strike a few silly poses as we strolled down the walkway, feeling like baking celebs. A Halloween Wonderland in Kara’s Encino Kitchen Stepping inside Kara’s home is like entering a perfectly curated, festive baking wonderland. Once you step inside Kara’s gorgeous mansion, your eyes immediately widen. Her gourmet kitchen was completely decked out in Halloween-themed charm for our class. Pumpkins were artfully scattered across a huge prep table, and the festive vibe was brought to life with Halloween aprons, placemats, headbands, and more. At each station, everything was immaculately arranged: perfectly measured ingredients placed on trays, top-notch baking tools at the ready, and adorable Halloween details everywhere you looked. You could just feel  the love and creativity Kara pours into each class. Each class is uniquely themed to match the season or occasion — whether it's Halloween, Valentine’s Day, or a birthday bash, the decor and details are always on point. Let the Baking Begin! Everything Prepped to Perfection This isn’t a “grab your own flour” type of class — Kara has everything ready to go , so you can jump right into the fun without stressing. It’s basically baking without the mess or cleanup. (Moms, can we get an amen?! 🙌) Aprons, Headbands & Halloween Vibes We slipped into our Halloween aprons and headbands (yes, even my son rocked one), and we were ready to get mixing. It was adorable, themed, and totally photo-worthy — which Denise, the pro photographer on staff, was already snapping away! Smooth Step-by-Step Guidance with Kara & Denise Kara is the baking fairy godmother you didn’t know you needed. She walks you through every  step, clearly and with a whole lot of heart. No guessing, no intimidation — just pure fun. And with Denise and other staff by your side, help is always just a hand wave away. Snacks and Socializing in the Garden Between mixing our dough and prepping the filling, we got to take breaks (yes, actual breaks!) and wander through Kara’s beautiful backyard. The garden, pool, seating nooks, and laid-back vibe made it feel like a mini-vacation. There were delicious nibbles to enjoy, and it was a great time to mingle and connect with other families. Touring Kara’s Beautiful Backyard & Orchard Kara personally gave us a tour of her homegrown garden  — she grows everything from berries to walnuts, and it’s all used in her baking classes. That personal touch? You could feel it in every corner of her home. And if you're bringing kids along — bonus! While the pies or tarts are baking away, younger guests can enjoy a little playtime of their own. Kara’s backyard is not only beautiful, but also packed with fun! There’s a mini golf setup and a ping pong table that keep the kids entertained and active. It’s the perfect way to keep the good times rolling while the oven does its thing. Chocolate Pecan Pie Heaven Mixing, Pouring, and Baking Like Pros Back inside, it was time to assemble our pies. With Kara’s guidance, we flattened our doughs, mixed our chocolatey, nutty fillings, and poured everything into our perfectly rolled crusts. Every step felt manageable — and fun! Wine Tasting & Conversation with Hummingbirds While our pies baked, Kara treated us to a wine tasting experience  in the backyard. A gorgeous table was set with wine glasses, and we sipped while chatting with fellow bakers under the warm glow of the afternoon sun. Hummingbirds flitted around us like we were in some magical baking fairytale. The Big Pie Reveal Our Masterpiece Pies Are Ready! When those pies came out of the oven… cue the applause. They looked — and smelled — like something out of a bakery window. Each pie came in a glass dish, and they were then packed in a custom Traveling Tarts pie box . We were genuinely in shock that we  made them! That First Delicious Smell The buttery crust, the gooey chocolate, the crunchy pecans — we were counting the minutes until we could devour them at home. And honestly, the smell in our car was pure torture (in the best way). Family Bonding Over Dough and Chocolate The absolute highlight? Watching my teen son not only participate but actually engage. He cracked jokes, asked questions, helped us measure — and even wore the headband! It was one of those rare golden parenting moments that you treasure. For three full hours, he wasn’t glued to his phone. He was baking with us, giggling, and enjoying every second. If you have teens, you know  how priceless that is.
