Poverty Encounter at Children's Hunger Fund

Located in Sylmar, California, Poverty Encounter is a 16,000 square foot exhibit that takes you into four immersive environments in the developing world. After boarding an airplane and taking a simulated flight, you will visit a dump in Guatemala City, walk the earthquake-damaged streets in Haiti, go inside a brickyard in Nepal, and enter an underground sewer in Romania. Each environment highlights the story of a real child living in these circumstances. Each tour includes a service activity, allowing you to provide both help and hope to those in need.

Ideal for families, individuals, and groups Poverty Encounter is an initiative of Children's Hunger Fund, a faith-based non-profit organization serving the church and suffering children in 26 countries around the world since 1991.

All ages welcome! Volunteer opportunities available.

"We went to this 2 hour experience a few months ago with our church and I can't even begin to say how much of an eye-opener it was. This is a must do for everyone of all ages! My kids learned so much and have a better appreciation for what they have. They're also happier to help out with the food packing because they've seen where the packages may go. It was great going with a large group, but it would be good to go with just your friends or family. I highly recommend this tour!" - Damien Q (Yelp review)

"Moving and amazing experience for all ages. We took our 9 and 12 year old, but the entire tour was geared to both kids and adults. This is something that all should experience. Great reminder about empathy, gratefulness, and to appreciate the every day things we have. The staff is kind and makes everyone feel as if they can make a difference. This is a great opportunity for families, schools, boy/girl scout troops, companies, and more." - A.N. (Yelp review)
